Oil additives

What's the deal with the oil additive craze? Is this stuff really needed or is it a good ole "snake oil scam" ?

its need since new oils are not as good as they use to be. they are removing alot of additives that older cars need. flat tappet cams need a good quailty oil/additive to live

i know at times i've thought of putting something in my car to help it run better. any suggestions? i would love for my car to last ALONG time and know that sometimes some extra lube would help. any one recommend something i can add? or we can add, i don't like to run the car hard and worry about something messing up when something as minor as an additive would help. So guru's any input?

i see it on here and is there a certain brand to buy, one better then the other like oil. never heard of it until i got on this board. I would like to know so i can make my engine last awhile longer.

If you can get Brad Penn oil they have specialty oils that have plent of zinc in them just for older engines running flat tappet cams.

NO SNAKE OIL,,,,,,When i worked in a GM dealer in the seventys there was one or two cans of EOS (engine oil supplement) in all the ,,crate motors ,,long blocks or short blocks......EOS yesterdays ZDDP

The best way to get concentrated zinc is the ZDDP product Richard Clark developed. You can get it from Kirbans.

I would say it's needed! My father just flattened a cam in his '56 Tbird using todays oils with no additive

I use a combination of amsoil,motorkote and lucas in my expedite van..Two things i noticed after adding the motorkote engine temps significantly decreased two notches below where the temp gauge sat at all times no matter what the outside temp is..

Ive verified it with other expediters when i sit at truck stops my truck runs cooler than thiers same truck same engine..ive only found motorkote at truck stops and its expensive but you use it every fourth oil change and you can use it in everything engine trans diff etc..

Second i dont know which product saved my engine but amsoil lets you go 25,000 between oil changes and my motors usuall use a quart of oil in between changes Well when my transmission let go i drove home to mi from ky in second gear at 50mph with the rpms up just a lil bit ..

I took the trans out and had it rebuilt and put it back and neglected to change the oil well i was back workin on the hwy and noticed a lifter tick looked at my gauges and it was at like 30 psi normal is 40 on the hwy i pulled over and checked the oil none on the dipstick whats worse i had a brand new case in the back and it took 4 1/2 quarts to fill it up meaning there was 1 1/2 qts in the engine ...not sure which product saved my motor but its a 2007 chevy 6.0 i bought new and its got 305,000 miles and its quiet as a church mouse even after the incident...Its also still using 1 qt between oil changes at 25,000 miles...

I use any oil I like and a bottle of RED STP oil treatment. Cheap and has plenty of zinc for the job to keep the cam happy.

RED is 4 CYL treatment and not as thick as the blue STP. The blue is a little to thick for our engines IMO.

I use a bottle of comp cams break in lube with every oil change. Price is a little salty at $10.00 buck's a bottle but after 2 cams going down in one year along with main and rod bearings due to cam failure i'm taking no chances. So far i've had this cam in for about a year with no issues.

I use 4 quarts of this with 1 quart of amsoil racing oil.

I use the VR1 Racing Oil and a bottle of ZDDP. I'm happy with it so far.

hello turboc; Your story sounds familiar. But a friend of mine had a regal (not turbo) and he was driving in the mountains of NH and his engine sounded weird and when he checked his oil. There was none on the stick. He took over 4 quarts. The engine never seized, he doesn,t know where it went. And he still drove with no problems. I do believe it was regular oil in without any additives. I think he was lucky.
