what does the bottle look like for the rotella that still good to use?

the "new" SM rated Rotella has what looks like a 3 leaf flower on the lower right hand corner of the front label with some sort of marketing lingo on it.
but i always look at the back for the API badge where it says what the oil rating is.
SM is the new stuff with the reduced zinc and what not. look for "SL" or lower. both of the Wal Marts withing driving distance of me have SL rated Rotella 5w-40 synthetic, but the regular Rotella is SM rated.

You need to buy a true Break In Oil such as a Joe Gibbs or Brad Penn Break In Oil. The ZDP additives in shelf oil are virtually gone and the lack therefore plays a HUGE role in Ring Seal as well as Flat Tappet lifter failures.

You should also warm up and then put under a full load a few times to seal the rings. You'll have a better sealing ring doing that than you will if you drive it around and baby it for the first 500 miles as the ring depends on cylinder pressure to force it against the cylinder.

You will also be very well off to put a bottle of the GM Engine Oil Supplement in there for the initial Start Up.

It is also not good to idle them untill you seal up the ring.

Of course it also depends on how aggressive the Hone finish is.
