Can anyone decode this Chevy engine vin for me: (F0407GF). I'll try to fine the casting numbers under the greese....
Thanks in advance.

I have the "GF" code listed for a 65-67 283 with a Powerglide. I'm assuming since the number ends in 7 that this would mean your block was originally in a 67 full size Chevrolet. The letter F means assembled in Flint. Later that plant became the infamous "Buick City" which also built the mighty LC2 for our cars.

Cool. Thanks. Its in a 66 impala that we just bought. I was hoping it was a same year engine. It does have the pg trans though. Thanks.

F= Flint MI
04 = April
07 = April 07
GF = engine suffix code. My book shows GF could be a 265 with 3 speed manual trans and a/c out of a 1955 Chevy, or a 283 fuel injected out of a 1957 Chevy or a 283 2 bbl out of a 1965 Chevy.

If you can post the casting code off the top of the trans flange I can tell you more. Also next to the numbers you posted might be a 2nd set of numbers on that same pad.

I'll look for more numbers. Nothing else on the front pass deck where I got these numbers. Definately not an '07 engine, Has old style canaster oil filter and large 13/16's size spark plugs. I know this could have been changed somewhere in time but it has the old style 4 bbl intake with the long oil filler tube in the front of the intake and the 4 even sized carberator holes (for carter 4 bbl carb maybe??)

Sounds like a hodge-podge of parts. The stock 283 would be a 2V carb of course. Cant be a 265 as those didn't have oil filters. 283FI would be solid lifters. I'd guess somebody threw a 4 barrel on the stock block or built a motor out of parts back in the late 60's or 70's.:confused:

You need to look for some numbers on the driver's side of the block at the rear of the block. You'll be looking for numbers on the flat surface of the block below the cylinder heads. Those are the block casting numbers and are approximately 3/4 of an inch in size. On the passenger rear of the block will be 2 or three numbers with a letter in between the numbers and those sequence of numbers and letter represents the block casting date. Therefore coupled with the GF, we can probably help you determine exactly what that block represents.
