I'm very curious as to what did GM originally put on GN/TR's as a frame protection paint . I have a low mileage TR that i'm re-detailing the frame , and the original GM stuff literally wiped off with varsol ? it's almost was like a black soft wax/tar paint . I would think any kind of decent paint would take more than varsol to remove it .

Frames weren't painted originally, they had cosmolene on them. That's why there's so many rust issues with them.

It is GM Chassis paint and yes it is gooey. It never really hardens. I hate it. I did a frame-off resto on an old Pontiac and used it, what a mistake. I am painting my frame in sections right now and am using gloss black Rustoleum with a foam brush. It is looking great. I use a heat gun and putty knife to get the old undercoating off the rails, then wipe it down with kerosene. It cleans up really nice.

That's what I figured it was something like that (cosmolene) on it, but I was not 100% sure . I thought cosmolene was good for rust protection ?

Cosmolene works great for keeping rust away in most cases. I've stripped rifles down that have been in storage for more then 40 years and never found any damage, I have however stripped rifles that were put away in the same manor and all that was worth keeping was the action. All the rest of the metal was ruined.:(

Thanks for the info , you learn something new every day :) . I think I'll stick to paint . got her all cleaned up and finished . very happy the way it turned out . :)
