I am going to paint my 1981 Malibu before the end of the year (I am attending a body shop class at my local vocational school) and want to paint it an eyepopping, jump out and bite you, RED. The guys at the paint store said Dupont Torch Red was the brightest they had ( I had a 92 Oldsmobile Achieva painted Torch Red, and although it was bright it didn't really didn't jump out and grab you). Anybody have any recommendations with a paint code I can check out? the paint should be Dupont as that is brand primer and primer sealer I have already bought........

Thanks guys!!

Well an 03 Pontiac Firemist Red Metallic isn't a bright red (actually it's kind of maroon) but it has lots of pearl in it and pops in the sun.

Hello...

Dupont is the "Brand" your using... you need the actual Manufactures code to look up the code...

Here are a few suggestions:

Dodge: Viper Red Code: LRN (non metallic bright solid red)

GM Torch red is: Code: WA9936 (non metallic bright solid red)

Metallic colors:

Chrysler: Code: ARH Blaze red (came on crossfire only)

Chrysler Code: WEL Inferno red (darker came on alot of chry. cars)

If your car is already in primer,

DO NOT SEAL the car before paint!!!!!!

Prep the entier car with 500Grit dry or P600/800 wet.

Use a waterbased degreaser and then tac cloth before paint.

Using the wipe on/off method. Then tac it off.

Apply base coat to the areas of primer first getting them covered

(assuming your using gray) also depends on if any other colors exist on

the car. Get the bright areas totaly covered first other wise you'll see through

it in the sun!

Once you've got the entire car covered in basecoat.. go to clear. 3 wet coats

should do it. Read the tech sheet that came with the clear to determine

approximate flash time between coats and do the sticky finger test.

Stick your finger to a taped part of the car where you've been clearing

and it should be tach'y. If it's strings off your finger or is wet WAIT.

Once it's tacky.. your ready for the next coat.

Any other questions feel free to e-mail me.
