He was a great man. My grandfather worked with him at our local cotton gin. Sad to see him pass.

It isn't much to talk about. lol. He grew up in a town 30 minutes west of here. When cotton harvesting season began, the local gins and farmers hired temporary help. Percy and many others worked at the gins or with local farmers during the harvest season. Percy sang as he worked. No one had any idea he would make it big, he was just the guy who sings all the time. My grandfather was a cotton farmer but Percy never worked for him. He just always talked about hearing Percy sing down at the gin. He worked here for a couple seasons and then he disappeared like most farm hands. They come and go all the time, moving around to whoever may pay them another .25 an hr more than the last. Then he began singing in the music studios in Sheffield and Muscle Shoals, just a few miles from PTC's shop. It was history from there. Recently he would still come back to sing at local music festivals and make appearances. I was contacted a few months back by a local reporter who knew my grandfather was a local farmer. 1 of 3 in this small town who used the local gin. They were looking for any story on Percy but my grandfather had passed and my father didn't remember anything to speak of because he was only about 14 years old at the time. Percy was like many others. They put in a hard days work, for not much pay but he seemed the happiest and sang all day long.

If you do enjoy music there is a small story on Percy in a documentary called Muscle Shoals. He spoke about working in the cotton fields. I enjoyed the movie. I drive by the studio he recorded in a couple times a week and never realized people like the Rolling Stones, Allman brothers, Percy, Aretha Franklin, U2 and many others recorded there. The local musicians who played in the studio had a particular sound many artists were after back then. The movie can be found on Netflix or even youtube.
