There is a way to get the old plates as vanity plates using licenseplates.tv and then you have to get a historic registration here in NY anyway. Ive been thinking of doing it

I’m pretty sure they changed to the Liberty plate in 87. Last I heard the car would have to be made in the tear the plate was available. So 87s would have to have the Liberty plate and earlier years would have to have the orange/blue ones.

That makes sense. My buddy did it with his 79 TA. Its 95 $ for each plate and I'm not sure how much DMV charged but he said it can save you money on the reggy if its historic plates.
The website has the liberty plates listed from 86-93.
