Ok guys im not a mechanic by any means so please help me understand what went wrong with my car. I have a stock 87 Grand National, I have never had any problems with the car and it has pretty low original miles. Yesterday I was driving the car at about 35 mph and I floored it after about 3 seconds I heard loud clunks and clicking about 3 or 4 and could feel them too. It was coming from the rear end what sounded like the transmission (sounded very very bad) I immediately let off the gas. I drove straight home but gave it about 3/4 throttle twice and the car accelerated fine with no noises. Should I be worried? What should I do?

when you have a chance, drive the GN around & listen for noise coming from tranny or rear end. if you have noise or marbles grinding try to isolate where it's coming from.

A long time ago, an additive was needed every 10k miles or so, for the posi rear end to eliminate chatter.
I bought a bottle but I have yet to need it in my 12,000 mile GN.
I'd try a bottle of that first, I think Kirban sells it but I'm not sure what it's called,
I'm at work and can't check. Maybe someone else can tell you what it's called.

I'd also check the rear Trans Mount. It could be shot & allowing the front U-Joint to rub the Tunnel.

First, Welcome pilgrim!

Post your location, there might be another TR owner or club close enough to you to get there and lend a hand. This is a pretty good bunch of guys and we try to help each other out. You don't want to travel too far from home and break down, as the theft rate on these cars hasn't diminished over the years, just got worse.

Ok I took the car out again tonight for about 20 minutes. The car drives like a dream at about 55 mph but as soon as i get on it the car begins to spudder and I lose power plus I hear light chatter from the rear end. This happend 3 times I floored it and I let off the gas immediately. The car is for sure losing power when I get on it and thats when I start to hear the noises, otherwise the car is perfect during normal driving. Any input??
