I bought a turbo and downpipe in a package deal off of a board member with an ATR gate. I looked at the turbine housing (Garret .82) hole and noticed the carbon marks show the ported hole in the housing is slightly off-center. I could port it larger a little more on one side if I wanted too. My question is: Can you port the hole too large with an external setup? After all, there is no puck to cover it. There is just the flange, so exhaust gas could not really leak past it. Does this make sense at all? It's kind of hard to explain if you've never seen one, which I hadn't up untill now. Any thouhts or recommendations?

p.s. I know the ATR gate isn't the best, but it's low miles and I'll be sending out to John Craig to get it tweaked. Plus, it was part of the package.

From what I read and on my setup the hole should be at least 1-1/4 when using an external wastegate , My 61 came like that from Limit Engineering.

That is big. Do you see what I'm saying when it looks like you almost can't port it too big? If you go bigger than the hole the air hits flange. At least that's my logic I guess. Can anyone confirm this?

porting

I used the Down pipe gasket from ATR as a template for to port the turbo. Simpel and works.

I gotcha , Do what Alaskabuick said then grind away :)

Do you guys use the gasket for just a template or do you actually install it as well?

I put a thin layer of that High temp copper seal by permatex on all the flanges including the wastegate ones.
