The Car That Saves Buick?
The '08 GNX could snatch Buick fromt the jaws of certain death...if GM makes it.
By Johnny Hunkins , Illustrations by Kris Horton

Despite GM's best effort at putting on a straight face and telling the financial world everything's fine, the reality is that the collective brass at GM drank the grape Kool-Aid. While some parts of the company are in acceptable shape, other parts are literally on a financial respirator, and none are in such bad shape as Buick. If Buick is to avoid the same fate as Oldsmobile, it will have to design and build cars that ignite a passion for driving while reinforcing Buick's long-standing tradition of affordable luxury.

It's clear from Buick's current offerings that somewhere between the impassioned plea for strong product and the actual end product, Bob Lutz's dream of exciting Buicks has evaporated. The new LaCross looks utterly forgettable, and has the performance to match. There's nothing in the Buick stable that remotely serves as a halo car and you can forget about performance, too. Incentives are high, inventory is stagnant compared to industry standards, and the import brands are circling like sharks in the water. What Buick needs is a GNX.

Our '08 Buick GNX can be the first step toward bringing Buick back to its former glory, or at least make Buick a sustainable part of a combined Buick-Pontiac-GMC product channel. We've based it on the new Zeta platform, giving it a fully independent four-wheel suspension, rear-wheel drive, a six-speed automatic transmission, and a 400hp LS2. It could be built on the same Holden assembly line that currently builds the GTO; with a slightly more upscale trim than the GTO it would cost about $1,500 more.
That's a worst-case scenario, but if GM decides to build the Zeta platform in the U.S. (as it had planned until late-March 2005), Zeta-based Buicks could be more than just a limited-edition halo model. If the U.S.-built Zetas were a reality, Buick could offer a base-model LS with a 3.5L 250hp V-6 for around $22,000, a 5.3L 300hp V-8 in GS trim for $27,000, and the granddaddy of them all--the 6.0L 400hp GNX for a transaction price of around $33,000. If you want to spank Chrysler, that's what it's going to take price-wise and performance-wise.

And the turbo? Forget about it. A major redesign of an available V-6 or V-8 engine (needed for a turbo) would cost too much and drive the price right into the stratosphere.

Buick used to stand for affordable luxury. Today, entry-level luxury buyers seek out Chrysler, BMW, Lexus, and Infinity while Buick is relegated to rental fleets and retirees. GM can change that: take the rebates off the table, use the money to build the U.S. Zeta plant, and then price the cars right up front!

they should do this quickly us or pontiac is next off the list like oldsmobile because the old folkes are buying the grand markus from murcury, instead of the lesabre.

A GNX badge on a car like that would ruin the legacy. Not even turbo........not impressed....not at all.

That car GNX or not is sweet. It's the only sport car Gm could offer to match mustang. What do they have now a corvette. Definately a sweet ride, 400 HP would be cool, but a 6 speed transmission semms extreme.

This has been posted before but I still like it turbo or not.

GN and GNX meant BLACK, ALL BLACK. None of this chrome BS.

I agree. if your going to do it, do it right! Where the friggen turbo/turbos? If anything, just make 547 of them...... :)

Why not use a current Holden TTV6?
I'm with you Ray, NO CHROME!

how do they get a GNX out of a GS. a GS was a Grand Sport then they had the GSX, then there was the Grand National, in return we ended up with a GNX. so how do they get off calling it a GNX when it should call it a GSX.

The unfortunate thing is, it's all Johnny Hunkins speculation, and really nothing to do with the reality of what's happening to GM under Lutz's leadership.
He alone (in concert with his bean counter buddies) killed the Zeta platform, and will bear the responsibility for the results.

You wont see anything exciting coming out of GM for a very very long time, assuming they even survive.

If anybody thinks this car is going to go into production you are being fooled. And even in the slightest chance that it might it will NEVER look the way it does in the pic. Be prepare for a GTO look alike with a Chebby small block, just like every dam car they make. This whole GNX thing started as a 2007 and now it’s a 2008!?! Forget it, GM will never put that kind of money into Buick. Don’t get me wrong I would love to have a new GNX, but I’m not buying a rip off POS.

GM needs to stop bleeding money quickly, namely cut back on the countless SUV’s and start investing into hybrids. Start listing to the public (for one this forum) Mr. Lutz or soon you will be conference calling your new boss at Toyota.

They need to stop letting their 'individually owned' chain of crappy dealerships bend the public over at every turn. Their face to the public - the dealers - is what's turning people off to GM. They're letting these little guys bankrupt a multi-billion dollar corporation. The cars aren't all that bad, it's the people selling them and maintaining them. The horror stories are in every forum I frequent. Even people who have dropped $80k on the Cadillac XLR get treated like dirt. Manufacturing cars that people want is just the tip of the iceberg.

Hard to beleive diehard GN fans would be accepting of a car on a platform that doesn't offer a turbo setup. That was the whole point of the GN name as well. Without it, you have the same regal as everyone else on the road. Am i wrong?

As stated before, it will never make it to production in the first place. And the comment about it being like a GTO before it would make production....ON THE DOT. Everything GM is producing these days is a knock off look of another car they make. The GTO is a joke when it comes to looks. Overgrown cavalier look to it. Every 2 door car and 4 door they make resembles another car in their line up.

Have been a GM fan all along, but you can only like the same car so many times over. Never been a Ford or a Dodge fan, but with the new cars they have out....ford with the retro stang and dodge with the charger and 300C and such, i would give them my money long before anything cookie cutter GM produces. (new car wise anyway) he he :D
