Poston's dash

I hate to say it but I'd be disappointed if I had shelled out the money for the poston's unit. Fit, finish and eye appeal seems to be lacking. If someone would reproduce the quality of the oem x's dash they would sale. They need to get rid of that texture pastic, do a better job of fitting the turn signal flashers and work on gauge placement.

btw...I won't be buying the Poston's unit either.

I just installed the Poston dash in my 85 and have the AVC dash in my 86. I have also built my own from scratch for my old Z28. I like the fit of the AVC better but the Poston dash was still worth the money IMO. It looks a whole lot better then the stock dash did and for the time and money it's not worth it to build my own again.

I'd rather have the Poston dash then gauges hanging off the A pillar and sitting in the console or a tach sitting on top of the dash. Just my .02.

I too am trying to aviod the A pillar guages if I can. I'm really entertaining the Dakota Digital. I'll be going with a new Alpine head unit when my system goes in so maybe the blue isn't too bad after all.

A GNX style dash would be my first choice but the fit and finish of the Poston's is just not up to par for me. Two each his own I guess. Your right tho, its better then the factory setup I guess. If it was around $450 I'd consider it.

Well first off, great job Catch on doing it yourself. I had mine installed and it cost me over $600 due to the design

It is pretty dim at night but you still can see it okay.

Night shots were taken in my garage.

The only reason I bought this dash, was because it was the only one that didn't, cost a ton of money.

So do you have to cut up your dash bezel and make the window bigger? or do those GNX gauge kits come with a new bezel?

Sorry, thats not my dash. It's just a pic I have saved. That was the way the GNX replica dashes ware mad a long time ago when it was available. It came with the bezel and was metal. It was a nice setup compared to what you can get now.

Oh ok. Yeah I hear you the Postons ones look real flimsy. Wished I had some thick sheet metal and some metal cutting tools. I'd start making them and offer complete units or bare panels.

Well, if he reads this...I have his 6 gauge setup with Stewart Warner gauges (and I love it, it's the one modification that gets the most compliments). The tachometer would never sit at 0 with the key off (see pic), and now when I'm driving, or even in park, if I take the RPM above 3K to 4K the tachometer goes to zero. The scanmaster will still indicate the RPM however.

With this setup the tachometer wiring wasn't run to the engine bay (meaning it wasn't hooked up to the white wire/green plug pigtail by the alternator), it used the original harness that the stock cluster used under the dash. I was told by someone from Poston's that to do this Tom had to use some kind of electrical component for the signal to get to the tachometer (RF modulator? Square Wave? Flux Capacitor?). I'm wondering if I could remove this component and run the wiring up to the engine bay and plug it into the aforementioned pigtail. I'd like to rule out the tachometer before I invest in buying a replacement and going through the nightmare of pulling the current one out of the cluster.

If anyone has any ideas as to what to check, and where, I'd really appreciate it (and please keep the language simple for a layman to understand as I'm not the greatest mechanic in the world).
