Sorry to be so vague but I gotta. Someone in our company got in trouble. Well lower management wants to reprimand any one that knew about it but did not say anything about it. Basically sinking ship and the rats wanna flee. If they accuse me of knowing about it and not saying anything....what should I do? My first job as a civilian so not to sure about covering my ass. Should I talk to HR or retain a lawyer? Prolly not go anywhere. Just wanna be prepared.

Just to clarify this was not a criminal act. Management is going on a which hunt. They will look for every "i" not dotted and "T" not crossed.
 
Everything is heresay except what is in a paper trail (including email, text and social media). If you're not involved, being uneasy about being accused is not sufficient cause for blame either. There is something called "at will" which means you can be let go for any reason but in this sue-happy world, companies are hesitant to pursue discipline without alot of fact finding and consensus first.
 
First, thank you for your service!

Second, what it sounds like is "them" looking for a scape goat. Just take it as a way to show how a man with "intestinal fortitude" deals with problems. Facts NOT opinions and feeling.

Read & re-read the policy manual; (management usually doesn't; they have to play by the rules THEY make)
& DOCUMENT anything said to you, even in a personal handwritten log
"on or about (date & time;location) the following was said to me by (name & position)..."
as prior service fall back on training to CYA; document , document, document!
If they ask you to sign anything, then contact HR and/or state.
(You're working as a contractor? Maybe some fed statutes you can invoke, as well...)
Again, keep notes, they add to the "preponderance of evidence" aspect in case it goes to litigation.
Hopefully it'll blow over, but maintain records for future reference!
Most law schools have advocacy projects that are free, as well.

Id never admit to knowing anything. Accusations are just that. They win either way. Sometimes moving forward requires "other" arrangements.

If it were me I'd be updating my resume and putting the feelers out to secure those "other" arrangements. No sense working where you aren't appreciated.

^^^this. I log everything I do that may have to do with reprimand at my day job. People I spoke to. What was said. Anything that could be used later if if had to take further steps. Whenever i get moved to a new location I typically "clean house". I deal with a lot of union associates and they think they are protected. The thing is they are not because I document everything. They take care of themselves. I would not let anyone I work for threaten me and if I felt I welcomed I'd take my services elsewhere. No reason to sign anything that may implicate you either ,

Exactly, only admit not knowing anything about the incident, say as little as possible when questioned. You can't win no matter what you say. Never, ever talk to HR they have only one agenda and helping you is not it. HR is only there to make the company look good and be the mouthpiece to tell everyone they are politically correct. If they have to use you to look good they will.

I would not cop to anything.
Even if somebody told you about the incident, it's your word against theirs,
unless more than 1 person told you or you passed it on to other people.

Yup, that's were we are now. When I first started working 45 years ago, you could actually work and have fun. Lawyers and idiots have since removed the "fun" from the equation. I retired (quit?) 5 years before my planned exit date because of the stress from just working... Whatever you do, save as much as possible so you'll have another option! ;)
 
I will remind you this is a public forum though no names are used in this particular thread, litigation will find everything if needed. Don't post here from work.

I agree with everyone, I deny knowing anything about the incident , let them decide , if they do let you go. find your local EEOC. and file a complaint, and ask a attorney, if they have violated any state law. don't know what type of work you perform but being a vet, opens up a lot of doors.
 
If you find yourself needing a attorney , let me know. I have one of the best attorney's in the Chicagoland area. He will make them wish they left you alone. If they threaten your job, or fire you. Contact me before going to the EEOC office. One poorly worded sentence could be the difference between winning their support / or not having a leg to stand on. You only need the EEOC to find that your story has merit. If they find in your favor , it is off to Federal court the company goes. The best of luck to you, and hopefully it all gets worked out in your favor.

I have a pen that is also a recording device that I bring to work. It helps me remember who said what and when. Exactly. My documentation is very accurate.
