I started a thread on here about a similar subject but we did not get into specifics. I would like to ask and discuss the proper wastegate pipe locating most people are using with their externally wastegated setups.

From the reading i have been doing and the info i have learnt on YB.com the most ideal placement for a wastegate is AFTER all the cylinders have been collected. In addition, the exhaust flow should be as direct as possible with the striaghest shot possible to obtain the most functioning wastegate.

My combo specifically is a PT70 4 bolt with a TiAL 44 wastegate. TA Headers, and a 3.5" straight shot downpipe.

When i bought the TA Headers, they had a wastegate tube already welded to the mainfold directly below the turbo flange, and after all the cylinder collected, BUT it was 90* to the direction of flow with the exhaust gas.

In my ignorance that is where i placed it and but when i went to the track two weeks ago i had no control over boost, due to this improper placement of the wastegate

HERE IS MY MAIN QUESTION: where have people mounted the piping for their external wastegate. On our headers the perfect "Y" position would be between #2 and #4 clyinders where the pipe makes the last bend to go up to the turbo flange. The problem with that is that it does not include #2 cylinder when it comes to evacuating boost.

TiAL mentioned that having a wastegate that is not after all cylinders will cause an inbalance in the engine.

Any real life experiences would be great. I would live to hear what the TSM cars are doing.

No one? I am sure people have struggled with this issue before. Some guidance or insight would be nice.

Thanks Guys,

There is a vast amount of information on wastegate placement on here. You need to speak more about your no control issue. I have seen so many different way of doing this all with good results. The boost level you are trying to maintain is a factor also. I bet your issue is a faulty component or misrouted lines. I had deltagate off the downpipe setup and it worked fine. Just looked too aggressive. I have seen them off the crossover and never seen symptoms of an engine problem. I would call Pete Barton or Patrick at Precision Turbo. They wont rush you off the phone but please check your car and components first!.

I know the components and the plumbing is correct,

I have a 4 bolt setup so Backpressure is much less than a typical 3 bolt 70 setup,

Basically i cannot keep my boost levels down at all even with a 2 psi spring i get over 17psi on the datalog. I believe the issue is that the exhaust gas is choosing the path of least resistance and that is through the turbo, not out the wastegate, which is placed 90* to the flow of exhaust gas.

What really agrivates me is that i spent way too much money for TA headers when they didn't even put any thought into properly designing headers for external wategate setups, All they did was drill a hole into the side of their header and call it a day. Not Impressed, that's for sure.
