I saw a post talking about issues with these bearings on this new 66 series DBB Turbos...

Does anyone have more info on this???

I had mine less than 6 months and it's going back to PTE to have it check for excess shaft play
 
NOT GOOD! Was considering one of these turbos myself. Guess I'll wait to see what's the problem. Have a link to those posts?
 
I would take that link with a grain of salt. The balls were steel in the last one I updated. The only down side I see to the precision design is that it doesn't have as an efficient thermal dissipation as the Garrett style does with the water jacket and the ex side of the bearing assembly typically has a lot of carbonized oil on it. I'd be concerned if the dry bearing housing design was to be used for continuous wide open throttle usage at high loads. Other than that the only thing that seems to vary is the machining of the bearing housing more so than the Garrett units. Don't doubt the reliability of the turbines either even though they are made overseas. They are the correct alloy for high heat. Precision has their own turbine wheels these days and no longer uses the turbonetics f1 wheels. I always VSR the ball bearing turbos after the component/assembly balance is done.

Do you think that reliability is a non issue partly because on our engines they won't see the boost levels that are attainable with these turbos on other engines that can take full advantage of them or are you saying the quality of PTE has improved considerably and has alleviated past issues that were common with the BB turbos.

Going from ceramic to steel BB and bearing housing clearances is the only physical change from what I got out of that write up and what you state about the last one you rebuilt.

I know you state there are some machining differences in the bearing housings, which if not up to par with Garrett and others could explain why the PTE has a reputation for higher bearing failure rates.

After seeing the damage first hand on bearing failure on more than one PTE BB turbo with less than 3,000 miles on them it makes me cautious and hesitant about buying one.

The cost of repair is high and in some cases not practical versus just buying a new one outright.

Which MFG. has the best CHRA for longevity [best tolerances] and materials??

I know that there a other choices out there and that some have run them, I just wish there was more feedback on comp and work turbos so that comparisons could be made.
 
Have to get them to make a 3 bolt exhaust housing first...
 
I know that comp makes a 3 bolt housing, or at least offers one.

Whether they actually make it I don't know.

When I needed a new turbo I was very hesitant to buy from PTE. I was reading about all kinds of low mileage turbos failing and of course its always the customers fault. That led me to Reed @ WORK turbos. I had originally sent my PT70 to him for a refresh. He explained that the way it was built and machined was outdated about 30 years ago and that it was obsolete. He told me about the BorgWarner turbos and said he had been working to run them on the 3 bolt housing. I told him what I had and to build me a turbo that he would put on his car. The BorgWarner S300sx3 6668 is what he came up with. He said the BW turbos are designed to be tough as nails and replacement parts are abundant. This turbo spools fast and pulls super hard. I have been to 26 psi with it and I am going to be turning up more soon. I recommend the BW turbo based off of my experience. Great price too.
