Howdy,

I was reading a bit about tranny controls for my 97.5 Regal GS and I noticed that the torque converter lockup is not a bianary device, it actually has a pulse modulated lockup on it. I was wondering, forgetting the controller part of it, what would happen if you did something like this with a good aftermarket lockup converter on the TH200-4R?

Thanks,

Only if you run the lower HP levels.
It was a drivibility thing, ie to min TCC chatter.

If your worried about distrubing you tea while driving then you might want to use on your 4R.. :)

So no fuel economy, effeicency, or other gains from the system? Just an NVH addition? Hmmm... Well on the TH200-4R the TC lock system is just a solenoid that gets power or not right? If thats the case, Maybe I can get the computer to either run it directly with a 0 and 100% threshold difference or make it run a relay to do the same thing. Hmm relay, switch the power leg to the relay so that I can keep it unlocked for the drag or not. Any disadvantage to having it lock in 3rd gear?

thanks,

They were modulated to calm customer complaint of "abrupt apply" with the old systems. You will need a carbon-fiber woven clutch to make sure it doesn't burn. The paper clutch will get destroyed with pulse modulation. Seen too many 4L60-E trannies come in that had just been rebuilt and they used a regular converter and we get to do it right at more cost to the customer, then they get to try and recover losses from the past rebuilders.

Ah... ok, no I don't want an NVH solution with a custom converter. Any idea if the signal from the computers for lockup on those cars can be used by the old school solenoids or will I be limited to the B&M external lockup control kit?

Depending on what editing software you have, you might be able to adjust the PWM, to 100% DC, so that it is on/off.

The only TCC aftermarket devise that I've like was the one DigitialHP was gong to sell. Without some adjustible hysterisis, TCC control is a pain, ie the DHP was the only one that offered that.
