I bought my wife an HP (online from HP); because it would run the software she needed; and dock with her station at work.

Doing research; it looked like HP and Dell were both built at the same factory in China. Probably only the name sticker was different.

Bought my son an HP at Fry's last night for college. Fry's had a new Compaq for about $350; and a refurb for $300 that would probably do everything most folks would ever need. They sell online also.

When the power supply went out on my last one I got an emachines from wally world for around $300. You can get a complete ready to go unit for around $500 or less if you look around. I got the one I have because it doesn't have vista on it. It came loaded with XP which I already have on disc so I'm happy with it.

Would this do?

I got a compaq laptop from Fry's also and the RAM just wasn't enough to deal with vista so I spent about $60 for new RAM and it's been happy sailing from there.

For a desktop I got an Emachine, It was a great price and has worked just fine for about 4 years now

Stick with Dell or H/P, stay away from Emachines!!!! Check the Dell site for their weekly specials and look for Ecoupons for further discounts!

If you are only looking for something to surf and email with, then pretty much anything out there new should be plenty. Unless you go Apple, then you most likely be getting a machine with Windows Vista on it. If you do, then you want to know that Vista is a memory hog. Do not get anything with less than 2 Gb RAM. Three would be better, and 4 would be great. If you want to take it with you places, then a laptop would be needed, but they cost a little extra. I have a netbook, which is good for email and some surfing, but wouldn't recommend it for most if it is going to be your only machine.

The HP I bought for my wife came with 2 gig; or could have come with 4 for an additional $150. I went to Fry's and got 4 gig for $30. You can get burned on the little stuff.

You posted in here? What's wrong with you, I thought we had safeguards.
I haven't had a problem with mine and it's lots faster than my old dell. What's wrong with emachines?

Emachines are very cheaply built but they are fine if you mainly use it for internet and email. Use it for a couple of years and toss it.

depends on what your wanting to do with it.

Surfing the net and email, HP or Dell.

If your wanting to edit photos, edit or create video and also want simplicity out of the box in addition to speed, then the new IMAC rocks.

I have and use both. I'm getting a small HP for logging in the TTA this fall.

HP and Dell will have coupons at their sites sometimes. Call and tell them you can get a better deal at the other site; or at Fry’s; and sometimes they’ll give you a discount also.

I believe that eMachines are probably of lesser quality than Dell or HP. But probably not much. You’ll probably have a problem fitting a generic power supply or mother board in an eMachine case if you ever need to make a replacement. You’d probably have the same problem with a Dell or HP also.

I worked with a bunch of guys that were Dell authorized repair and resellers for a while. They all used eMachines. We even used them as servers. They just didn’t tell their clients or Dell. They finally had to “upgrade” when someone from Dell said they wanted to come and see all of the machines that they were preparing to ship out of the country.

My personal home machine is a gutted Compaq case with a Quad chip running Vista Business 32. I haven’t tried 7 yet; although the disks are setting on my desk as I type. I’d still be running 2000 or Solaris if I could get my mail as easy.

Psssssssst Charlie..................Im an IT Director!!!

I order computers all the time and I have had the fewest failures with the Dells..You are one of the "lucky" Emachine owners!! Their failure rate is very high.
