Quick smoking turbo solutions

OK, I'm about to post what quite possibly may be the stupidest question ever at tb.com. I have a turbo on my '85 GN that is shot, and smoking oil badly (even comes out the tailpipes when I get on it). If I turn the adj. wastegate all the way down (off-hand, that would be to the left???), will it bypass the turbo and not smoke anymore? I'm gonna have to guess no, but you guys know more than I do.

No, its going to smoke. Its the seal thats bad. You can't "bypass" it. Sorry
