R134a shortage?

Last time I was at Walmart it seemed like R134a was getting pricey, I come to find out there is supposedly a worlwide shortage.

Does anybody know more about this?

Is it likely to come back down in price, or is it time to buy all you can, like I wish I did with R12

I think the reason is not shortage its because something to do with new laws regarding containment of old freons etc....

My supplier told me that there were three plants that made 134 here in the US... one shut down completely and another went to making something different for use over seas.

Now there is only one plant left manufacturing the stuff and they cannot keep up. Through him, a 12 oz can is 15 bucks now (350 for a 30lb can)... I saw it at walmart the other day for 8 bucks per 12 oz.

I dunno, this is waht he told me, I have 60 lbs in bulk now that I bought a few years ago, so hopefully I will not have to buy any in the near future.


Anyone know how to get the liscense on line to purchase the R12, Freeze 12, and r22?

Part of a Dupont plant who makes the the R134 burned and caused the spike in price. Price will go down soon as the plant is up and running.....

I got the small can for $7 the other day & thought it was pricey.
The bigger cans were $15-

I think it is the retailers that know summer is here & people will be adding the stuff.

I know we had 2 days of summer like weather at 70 degrees wich forcedme to use the AC you know to make it still feel like winter.

Propane is $7.50 for 25Lbs and Dupont doesn't get a dime of it

Do a little research and save a ton of money.

As far as 1 plant stopping production of R134 to make something else for overseas, that is because R134 is ILEGAL overseas because it is too dangerous.

Where at exactly? I have tried to research this out but can find nothing backing this up. Matter of fact, the only thing I can find is where they expect over seas countries to start producing it more...

What was told at my work was that europe is now using R134A vs R12 so the demand is up and the supply cant keep up. Thus it went from 4.50 a can to 13.69 a can at my work. It may be all BS though....... *shrugs*

Did you guys know that R12 is most smuggled item into the States from Canada?

How about some of our Canadian buddies help us out here in the States

In the process now of getting mine ! Go look up MACS, stands for Mobile Air Conditioning Society, or something like that, cost is $15 and its an open book test. Wish I had open book tests when I went to school !! And you have 90 days to complete the 25 questions !!

check out the freeze 12 too.


Case of it (12 cans) on ebay is about $90 after shipping. Heard great things about it.


There is also a new "duracool a12" on the market that is supposed to be more efficient than r12... It is new, but I have seen the tests on it (allbeit from the manufacturer) and it seems to be some good stuff. I guess we will see in the long run
