Depends on boost, depends on temps, depends on how well the motor breathes, depends on engine temps, depends on carbon deposits on your pistons, depends..
I did a kit on a local GN with a front mount, te60 turbo, 70 MM TB, DP, etc... That car loved timing. But again it would run 20 PSI zero detonation on pump gas. So at 26 PSI it was like give me more..more..more timing. Think its up to like 26 degrees and no knock.
My car on the other hand.. cant handle but 23 in 1'st.. 21 in 3rd at really high boost.
You can make power on boost, you can make power on timing. lets see whats faster, car runs 20 PSI boost at 27 degrees timing, or car runs 27 lbs of boost at 20 degrees. The latter wins.
See if your stock turbo lets say maxes out at 21-23 SPI, and thats all the boost it can muster.. then your only option is adding timing to make additional power. Hence why guys with stock turbo's rave about timing.. they say.. I run a 108 chip at 20 PSI boost.
Hope it makes some sense ..
Running high timing increases the tendancy for detonation. More so than boost when using alcohol. At least thats been my own findings.
