Rear main seal...steel pins,or anaerobic, or the right stuff???

using the neoprene rear main seal...seems some say dont use the steel pins with the rubber for the sides as it will leak , others says use the right stuff and squeeze it down the sides, and how about an anaerobic sealer???

so whats best short and sweet...thanks noah.

I use rtv and never had a leak. I would not use an anaerobic sealer on that spot. Just squeeze it in till it seeps out between the cap and block consistently.
 
I just replaced the rear main seal on one of my turbo cars. Used the rubber and the steel pins. No leaks. I squeeze some RTV in each side slot before I push the rubber seals in and then put the steel pins in. Trim the rubber seal off level with the block and your good to go.:smile:
 
I use a very thin film (too thick will alter the bearing crush) of Loctite 515 between the bearing cap and the block horizontal faces and Silastic 232 extruded into the slots on each side. The technique required is to maintain the pressure in the gun (or roll the end of a tube around a screw driver) as you draw the nozzle out of the slot. This avoids air gaps. Key to any method is clean parts; acetone or paint thinners works well.
 
Clean parts. I've never had a problem with an ULTRA THIN layer of rtv where the cap mates to the block and then pump the sides full of rtv until it comes out on both sides of the cap. Give it time to set up and then it's easy to trim the excess. james
 
Lots of opinions on RM seals.

I like the Felpro rubber seal kit. I clean everything with rubbing alcohol or brake clean, a dab of assembly lube on the bearing, a thin film of anerobic on the parting surface, a squeeze of Permatex Ultra Black in the grooves before pushing the side seals in place and driving the nails home. Works for me........on lots and lots of engines.

I have to with dave.Not only for buicks but my very first car which then didn't have silicone.I think of it as an intake upside down....JMO

Exactly the process I use!! Works! Part of the secret is perfectly clean surfaces.
 
Does anybody have a part number on the neopreme rear main seal and who is it made by. I thought I read something about a part number for the seal that the nascar guys use?

Actually, Woody, my Permatex catalogs list:

Part Number / Container Size

The way Permatex identifies their products, "518" is the base part # of the actual material, and the digits after the base part # denote the packaging type.
 
Sorry Tom....I wasn't trying to steal your thunder.....I didn't know the last 2 digits denote the package size......lo and behold, I have the 50ml size.

PS Don't pay any attentiom to me.....seems I keep my foot in my mouth more than on the ground...........
 
I used the rubber pieces and the pins but put some right stuff in the holes before I slipped the rubber in.
