I've been a lurker for a good while here and have learned a lot from you guys. My stock 87 turbo has a little shaft wear that has allowed the blades to touch the housing on the intake side. There is just a slight line showing where it has rubbed but the blades look good. Have I caught this soon enough that I can just put a bearing rebuild kit in it and be ok? Also, where is the best place to get a kit to rebuild it?
Thanks for this and all the other info in the past.

turbo rebuild

There are companys that sell center section ratating assemblys. That is an option that you might consider.

They call them "CHRA"... which stands for "Center Housing Rotating Assembly".

IMHO... there are some how-to's over at gnttype for rebuilding your own turbo....

they say if you have a decent mechanical ability... and a few specific measuring tools.... it isn't a big deal.... just follow the steps...

John Craig at Limit Engineering can set you up with a 360 deg kit.... last one I price a year or so ago was around $129.... you send them your "measurements"... and they will send you a kit with everything you need assuming your housings/wheels/shaft is in good working order.

If you decide on letting them do it... it would be a good time to step up to an upgraded turbo.... an easy 1/2 sec more potential over stock....

WHat special tools are needed to rebuild the turbo? All the threads I've found all say they're pretty straight forward. I figure if I can build a motor and its not knocking after 200 miles of beating after break in then I should be able to handle this, right:confused:

gpopshop.com has complete stocker rebuild kits for 89 bucks.

A micrometer is the tool I don't have.... should get one on eBay just to have anyway....

I don't think a dial caliper is good enough...

So unless the wheel blades are beat up, just putting a bearing kit in it should do the trick. I have mechanical ability, tools, dial indicator, etc. to do the job. I am just wondering at what point would you purchase the cartridge or center rotating assembly instead of just replacing the wear parts.

I hate to bring up the evilbay name but there is one guy on it that has rebuild kits in utah name johnsmith. He offers the parts for $75 and if you ship him the shaft and wheels he'll balance them for the cost of shipping if you buy the kit.

The only "special tool" I needed was snap-ring pliers with long & extra small tips; I did need to tap 3 holes for the retaining screws for the 360* thrust bearing, but that was no big deal. It really is very straightforward. I soaked everything in Berryman's for a few days to destroy all the carbon.
