Just got my trans rebuilt and a new converter in it and it won't shift.

I put 14 quarts of fluid in the trans, and did the standard TV cable adjustment (with the 'routine' TV adjustment procedure, the nose of the cable was all that was showing out of the housing (about 1/4" of the cable. I'll take a pic tomorrow to better show what I mean). Then I warmed the car up for about 10 minutes. then jacked up the rear and ran thru the gears....reverse is good, first is good, but it wouldn't go past that. I let it run on the jackstands for 5 mins. max, then I let it down and checked the fluid. Seemed a quart low, so I added one, which bought it up to level. Jacked it up again, but it still did the same thing. WTF  I took it up the street about an 1/8 mile. First gear feels good, not slipping, but you can feel the converter is definitely looser than the stock D5 that I blew up....feels much better now (9x11....thanks Bruce :D). But it won't shift....what is wrong with this thing?? I turned around and put it back in the garage.

After that, I adjusted the TV 2 clicks further out (pulled cable towards front of car), jacked it up again and ran it thru the gears, but still the same, no shift. Didn't want to go further than that so I called it a night.

Opinions anyone? More TV cable adjustment or is something else amiss?

TIA
Steve

What code trans, who rebuilt it, did it shift fine before rebuid? GOVENOR? :D

Oops....sorry I forgot all that. the car is my GN and the trans is a BRF with a BRF VB. Trans rebuild is one of Cotton's specials (better clutches, hardened stator support, etc.) built by Eric Schertz. It's not the same trans that was originally in the car, it was an exchanged unit. I gave mine to Cotton a month ago to have it rebuilt by Schertz but with all the Dynotech dealings going on he couldn't get it done so we did an exchange.

I was beginning to think governor but I couldn't figure out why it would be that on a fresh rebuild. When I let off the gas when I took it down the street, it freewheeled, there was no engine braking. Are you thinking governor spring?

Steve

PS....forgot to mention that right before I shut it off for the night for good, I noticed a slight ticking sound that increased as RPMs increased (never made that sound before). Also noticed a couple of quick pfft pfft pfft noises coming from under the car, but they seemed to stop.

To be honest I'm not sure about the gov. being a true BRF, but the VB is a BRF (stamped "BR3" and has the 2 electrical hookups). I would tend to believe that Cotton or Schertz wouldn't do something shady like changing tags on the trans, being as reputable as they are....but I'll call Jack on Monday morning. Meanshile I'm gonna take the gov out and check to see if it is in fact BRF-spec.

You said that it couldn't be the governer if it freewheels, but last summer I threw the gov. spring and it did this exact same thing. After I had the gov. spring pinned, problem was solved. I'm not doubting you, just kinda curious as to why it did that.

Thanks for responding to my problem :) I truly appreciate the help.

I shouldn't say that with absoult conviction, as I'm no expert, just never heard of freewheeling due to gov. Good luck with your trans, hope it's something that simple, would hate for you to have to pull it again. :D

Well you were right! It wasn't the governor....it is definitely something else. I was hoping that was it but I guess not.

Thanks for your help Mark.

I understand Steve found lots of metel filings in the trans pan, where do ya suppose that could have come from? And what would metal filings do to the valves in the valve body?

I do not believe..

either Jack, Eric, nor I did you wrong. I am very curious to know what cooler, and how you flushed lines. That crap in the pics looks like residual material from a not properly installed cooler and/or radiator. Did you have the radiator flushed and rodded? Did you install a new cooler? Did you have the lines heated and flushed?
I also believe your problem is not a stuck valve due to contamination. I would bet Pressure related which is not unusual at rebuild at all. If Eric and Jack were involved you got what you asked for, so that is not an issue. As far as my converter, I would bet my rep that ain't it either! Eric knows the quality of our converters and also KNOWS that if one of my brand new converters took out one of his brand new trannys, I damn sure would make it right with him. BUT THAT IS BETWEEN VENDORS not an internet bulletin board!
And yes BTW a Gov spring shot out will freewheel at low speed.. Tv valve stuck back will too not nessarily from unit. No big deal. Simple pressure check would tell you all you need to know. I wrote you a private email concerning this. I guess you didnt quite understand what I was telling you.

I cannot believe you went to this board before you even contacted the vendor /or builder.
This is how crap gets started.

I am not real happy with the way this was handled.
Those guys are great people to deal with. Eric is sharp as a tack and very well versed. He is a good allie, keep it that way.

I myself , no offense, will not respond to this thread again, in tech help or otherwise, unless, it is to admin it if it should get ugly,
Good Luck.
