I hope someone can help me here, i have a 231 v6 3.8 Buick engine (1980) and one of the pulley's is knackered and needs replacing, i was about to start when i realised this was the pulley for the emissions pump thingy (technical eh ?) I have heard about people removing the emissions system all together and to be honest less clutter in my engine bay is the way to go for me.

I have a really naff pic of the engine bay here.

before i start any work in there (inc. cleaning !), could someone point out all the relevant parts of the emissions control that i can remove and what effect if any it will have on the car ?

P.S i'm in the UK so its legal to remove all this emissions stuff ;)

TIA.

Is the engine computer controlled? If so, leave it all on or take it all off. If not, then How cold does it get where you live? If relatively cold, the tempurature controlled air cleaner assist with warm up. If you're not concerned with cold start warm up, then install an open element air cleaner. Does it have a heat riser on the exhaust system? That too assist with warm up, but will free up the exhaust sytem if removed. A little ricer on the carb and some timing changes will allow you to negate the EGR system. If computer controlled, then so is the carburetor and timing. Therefore, to remove the air system will affect catalytic converter operation, becuase the AIR system on most computer controlled vehicles helps the cat light off, then dumps the air. So if you remove it, then change the carb to a non-feedback carb and ditch the convertee. Also, install a distributor that has standard mechanical and vacuum advance and ditch the computer controlled spark. Also, O2 sensor and other computer sensors are also not needed.

as far as i'm aware it's not computer controlled, i will have to investigate closer as i've only driven it home into my mums garage and left it parked whilst i get ready to do the work on it so i need to do some investigation work.

As for the climate changes it drops to about -10'c max and goes up to 30'c on a good summer, the car will probably only be driven in the summer as they salt and grit our roads here to combat Ice and it wreaks havoc with cars :(

so if i just pull the 'air pump' out of the loop to render the system useless and kill the rattle, is there anything else i should remove/block/tighten/blank off to keep the engine running sweet ?

thanks

right thats easy then, thanks, i'll probably pull the pump too seeing as it will be doing bugger all but adding weight :)

many thanks.
