I work at a trans shop and we use precision converters in everything, so I had my boss call them today and ask about restalling a D5. He told them it's a GN and all that mess and they said it's only a 2K rpm stall from the factory and could only be made to go about 2200. I know that's BS, the guy asked about horsepower and was told 300-350. He then proceeded to say that at that power level  it needs to be an aftermarket converter with anti ballon plates on it. It's a mild street car! Who can I send this thing to that can get me about 2800 or so? I realize that a good 9" converter is the way to go, but I just need a little help getting the TE44 to spool going through the original exhaust. Down the road I will get a real converter, when I get a turbo that needs one. Thanks.

You can get a high stall D5/Z-28 convertor with 27 spline input for $330 and it is brazed, bearinged, and reinforced. Between shipping and restall cost, that may cover the whole thing. They stall between 2600 to 2800 depending on your build and car. That level of stall is a great set up on a mainly street use with a TE44.

Is that through PTS? May end up doing that instead of a restall. Thanks for the info guys.

My boss still swears that it can only be a 2000 stall stock and that it can not go over 2200 without losing all efficiency. He needs to go for a ride in this thing sometime.

The converter that comes out of the Vette or Cutlass has a 2k, maybe they are getting them mixed up with the GN converter.

I would not spend $330 on the stocker when Pats just had a deal for like $400 on a new 10". Sell the stocker for $50 and your square with a better converter.

The Vettes and Cutlass converters were usually coded with an F or G as the second digit and they were around 13xx-1500 stall. Only 2000 stall ratings were in the TR's and the Bravada type trucks with the 4.3. Codes were usually either the A or B which was rated at 2025 or 1996 stalls. All my GM literature shows nothing above a 1500 for a Vette.
