Reverse Lights...??

For some reason when put my car into reverse the lights won't pop on until I pull back on the shifter a little bit?? If the car is in neutral the reverse lights just work, but I know they shouldn't be on when in neutral....!!!! Is this a linkage adjustment needed?

On top of the steering column inside the car at the rear near the firewall is a switch. I don't recall the name of the switch. 1st, place gear selector in reverse, with the key on engine off, then adjust the switch until the reverse lights illuminate. The adjustment slides, so the switch does not need to be loosened. You'll understand once you get your head under the dash.
