i have surface mild rust on the original 8 GN rims, since the car sat for so long, what is the best chemical, technique to get these bad boys shining again??
it still has shine if i buff them, but rust still present, dont want to ruin them with unnecessary chemicals

thanks

I've actually used Grease Lightning before too. I tried it out on a bumper of an old truck first so I knew it wouldn't mess up my wheels

So first Using Sand in a sandblaster leads to silicosis which is no fun. Use Silicate free products

How did you keep it from dulling the finish

Ok here is what we did we had non silicone sand. Yes the sand did dull the finish a lil but what we did is polished them and then took them to our buddies powder coating shop and coated the wheels with a clear powder. Its like a clear coat paint that you put when you powder coat. They look good hard to tell they were blasted.

i think ill just try the good ole fashion..knuckle busting technique...use eagle 1 or hit it with some mothers.....ill post some before and after if i remember to do it...also before and after of my knuckles...lol

Use naval gel for boats that takes all the rust out perfect, with out scatching the rims.

i bough some naval gel, it says DO NOT USE ON ALUMINUM AND/OR CHROME.
Have you or anyone tried this Naval Gel on your rims yet, without messing up the shine??

Thanks

I have used fine (real fine) steel wool with WD_40 to take rust of guns without damaging the bluing. It would be a last resort though

Hey brooklyn I have used it.Just put the gel where the rust is only, an keep it on afew minutes until the rust comes off, than hose it off with water and wash rims with soap and dry them. I had some true spokes rimes that were rusty 20yrs ago and that stuff worked miracles for me.You could use rim polish afterwards .

I used Nev-r-dull and Mothers chrome polish with good luck.

boat shops have steel wool made of copper or brass dont remember which, regular steel wool will embed steel in parts and help promote rust. i learned that from a old man that restores vintage harley's

I'm stumpped.
I don't know what kind of rust you guys have down there, but here, when they rust (detroit) they rust. You can "rub off" the rust with any sort of method you choose, but there's no way you're going to convince me, that after the rust's off, that it "shines" all over again... You guys must have never seen these rims when they were brand new, because there's no freakin WAY your rim shines like new, after you just removed the rust. I have a set of beater rims I use, when I'm not at the show, and they were very slightly rusted on the outer portion of the rim, and I started very gently, (brasso) and moved up, till it came off, and they are nowhere NEAR shiny. I mean nowhere NEAR. They're all dull and **** where the rust was...

You must mean surface rust. And by surface rust, you must mean, after the car sat for 3 days in the rain... and that's it. Any longer, and it's going to pit. There's no way you're shining the steel underneath where the pitting eroded the chrome off, to a sheen that was just like the factory chrome. Unless you
wet sanded it with 1000 grit paper for hours, then took a buffer wheel on an electric drill motor to it, while working down from a course rouge, all the way down to the finest they make. THEN re-clearcoating it, before it rusts all over again, within 5 minutes. Ask me how I know that... :)
