Slowly I have been tuning my car and was excited about running it today. It was running beautifuly then on a nice stretch, stomped it, tires squealed like a stuck pig, rpms climbed, and stay climbed, and would not shift into second. let off and it kind of sort of shifted into it. Now it really doesnt want to shift into 2nd gear.

Have not wanted to admit to the sorry news and just needed to be told what could be the problem?

Kinda sounds like the governor spring to me...Not to hard to replace and hopefully you can find it in the pan.

IF you can drive it to about 20-25 in first gear, then let off the gas pedal and it shifts to 3rd.... You broke the second gear band.

If you can get it into 3rd, drive up in the rpm range so that you can manually downshift to 2nd and barely give it some gas, if it free revs, then the band pin is broken.

2 of my cars did this in the last 5 months.

Really? Please educate me because I was fearing the worst. I thought the flaring would have to do with the clutchs not sticking due to sitting ( the previous owner let it sit for a couple of years).

All input is appreciated !!!

You didn't say it was flaring...You said it doesn't want to shift into 2nd.

If it's flairing then you basically need a rebuild...If it ain't shifting at WOT then it could be the spring.

So, go out to the car, take it down the road and do what i posted earlier.

If you pull the shifter down to second gear while normally driving in 3rd, and it acts like neutral, then your second gear band pin is broken.

And if you slip the clutches once, they need to be replaced because there is minimal friction material left on the discs.

You could get by with a refreshment of the steels and clutches, a few tv valves and a second gear band for around 300.00 plus labor depends on who does the work. Do you know anyone local that does trans work?

If you pull the car back into 2nd and have a gear, then it could be the govenor or tv valve.

I finally had a chance to take the car out.

Excuse me if im not the best at explaining this but here it goes:

The car does down shift into second if I do so manually, but then if I get on the gas it free revs.

When I manually shift into second it does catch and slow the car down into second gear ratios, until i slam on it, which then it free revs

If cruising the car it does seem to shift into second, again if i get on it seems to free rev, if i let off it seems skip 2nd and power its way through third.

I dont know reasonable mechanics, so I will be looking for a rebuild kit and a good manual. :D

Second gear band is broken just as i thought:)
So, as you are driving in 3rd gear and manually pull the shifter to second the car will slightly nose over. But once you try and give it a fair amount of throttle, then the engine free revs and the car doesnt want to go anywhere only when your in second gear. First gear feels great, and once in 3rd gear and it stays, then 3rd gear feels fine on the highway.

I would find someone local to you to do the repair, its more involved than you would think to rebuild the tranny.

Would you like for me to move this thread to the transmission section so other tranny gurus can chime in and help diagnose your problem since this is the general tech section?

Thanks

Thats exactly what its doing! I really appreciate the help.
I think I can manage the an automatic transmission rebuild, I watch Speed channel all the time! JK lol!! Ive started looking already.
Its just good to know what the problem is and moving the thread is no problem.
