Car has been running great lately (23# and no kr)but yesterday I had the pcv valve vac hose come off. Now car is having all kinds of issues.
Sputtering above 15# with no KR and o2's are 750 or above.
I checked for more vac leaks and couldn't find any. fp is 42 line off and all sm readings are normal. Motor is tapping under pass. v/c. I am pulling v/c's tomorrow to check valve train.
I can also smell raw fuel under the hood but can't locate a leak:confused:

You probably bent the rocker shaft, from reving it up too much. Pull the covers

valve covers are coming off tonight or in the morning. I will post up findings. Guess the cam, lifters, and spring change I was going
to do this winter might be a little sooner....

pulled valve covers and rocker shafts. no cracks or bends. There is play between the roacker arm and shaft when the shaft is removed from engine. is that ok?
I think it's a bad lifter...
also, where can i get those plastic rocker arm retainers?

Yes that's normal with stock rockers, they have some play and go to Napa to get those buttons.

Could the tapping you're hearing be the injectors in batch mode...or maybe even a flattened cam lobe?

thanks for all the info guys.
I also looked at the springs and the wear pattern on the rocker arms and valve stems. everything looks normal. I also checked the push rods for straightness.
I am still leaning towards cam or lifters. I will check valve travel after I put rocker shaft back on.

I prefer to start with the simple, easy diagnostics first.

With this case, it would be a compression test. :)

It could even point out a bad cam or lifter?

compression test results:
1,3,&5 were all 105
2&4 were 100 and #6 was 90

I rechecked my plug gaps and a few were around .040:confused: I know I gapped them to a tight .030.... I regapped them to a tight .030 for sure this time.
won't get to road test 'til monday. Boat parts came in today so I will be on the water tomorrow:biggrin:

Turns out it was the plug gaps.... Don't ask me how but a couple were around .040
They (NGK UR5) are all at a tight .030 and it is pulling like a freight train to 23#:)
tapping noise from pass. side was an exhaust leak.

now I can get back to tuning:cool:

I'm curious how you determine an exhaust leak?

I have a slight tapping sound recently occur, and to me, it sounds more like a header leak than a metallic valvetrain noise.
I'll pull the passenger's side valve cover on my day off to be sure, but since these TR's seem to develop header leaks so frequently, what is the easy check to find an exhaust leak?
If there is such a thing. Easy that is.

Smoke test should show the exh leaks.

1Fast6... From the looks of those compression test results, a rebuild, along with the cam, is a good idea....
The hose blowing off could well be that compression you've "lost", made it's way to the crankcase/pcv....
