i just want to buy a scanmaster tool for my 85 all i see are for 86/87 buicks who sells a scanmaster tool for the 84/85s ? maybe you guys can lead me in the right direction with a vendor who i can purchase from who did u guys buy it from ? thanx

Well.......... there are some cheap scanners out there (like a OTC) that will work.

I use a old snap on.

Another option, you could switch to a 86-87 ecm then you could run a scanmaster. You would also need a 86-87 maf from what I understand.

Yes. That is what I am doing right now. I bought a used ECM and MAF. Its basically plug and play if you have the right chip.

where can i buy the OTC? say i do get an 86/87 ecm and a maf is it a simple swap ? or will i running into other issues i just want to b able to read codes wen my service engine light comes on like it does now and just handle the problem

an old turbolink 2.13 will work and you can pick one up cheap .it is a great scan tool but you need an old laptop.i still use one today for troubleshooting peoples cars

I would just convert to the 86-87 ECM/MAF and be done with it. There are so many more options with the 86-87 ECM setup as far as scan tools and adjustability in chips etc...besides, it is a very simple swap. All you need is the following:
86-87 ECM (with chip...stock 86-87 chip will work)
86-87 MAF sensor

That's it. the ECM plugs right in like the 84-85 and so does the MAF sensor. The only thing that you have to deal with is the 86-87 MAF sensor is about 1/2" shorter in length than the 84-85 one...ditch the restrictive stock air box and clamp a cone filter on there and problem solved. HTH ---Keith

If you choose not to upgrade to the 86/87 emm/maf at this time I have an OTC 2000 that I've used on my 84 that works perfectly. I've already upgraded my ignition and in the market for a scanmaster. I'll sell you the OTC for $75.00 shipped if you're interested. Let me know and I'll get it to you asap.
Thanks,
Steve

The other guys are right about the upgrade but I did exactly what you are doing. I bought the otc and used it till I upgraded. It actually will work for the 86/87 ecm conversion as well but there are much more informative units like the scanmaster and others to use with that set up. I'll PM you my info. Thanks,
Steve

P.S. The otc2000 is a stand alone unit and you will not need a laptop. I have all cables that you will need too.

i'm running an 87 ecm with my stock 84 calpack, Turbotweak chip, and the stock 84 maf.
it runs great.
