First.. main trigger for me is dehydration. Colon gets dehydrated and pulls water from the spinal discs. Then what happens is you take pain meds.. and then that dehydrates you worse. Notice when you take pain meds you cant go #2..

I find drinking a lot of electroltye water(gatorade, smart water, etc.) and keep the water up. The other thing is get into a tub of warm/hot water and get into the fetal position to open up the back. This allows the discs to get hydrated.

Hydration to me has been the key to staying pain free. Trust me.. I missed a race in January and been pain free ever since. Things like diareah(bad food), being in the sun, sweating a lot, etc.. things that dehydrate I watch like a hawk.

Good luck.

I just joined this wonderful club. Have a long history of back problems to the point where I am crawling on the floor but this is the first time it has hit with sciatic pain. Back hasn't healed completely since the last floor crawling instance back in mid July, well overdid it at work this past Friday and the sciatic pain hit me on the way out for pizza and beer that night. Worst part is driving, still went to a cruise nite that Saturday and almost turned around but pain goes away when standing so toughed it out. Once at the cruise I stood for about 3 hours without any issues but when having dinner there I was in misery. Ride home sucked too but still had a roll off against a new Vette on the way home, hell was in a hurry to get home.o_O

Spent the day on the couch between walking around on Sunday, Monday went to work, had my chiro work me over and took today off. Freaking big toe on left foot has been numb since Friday. I'll take the back pain over this any day.

I have a lot of back problem too. I used to go to the chiropractor every couple weeks. When I went in they would use a electronic muscle stimulator and then adjust my back. Most of my problems are muscular spasms so I bought a muscle stimulator from them! Best $160 I have ever spent.

It is kinda fun suckering the guys at work into letting me hook them up to it and then cranking it all the way up. I sucker them in with the fact that it is just a 9 volt battery so what can it hurt. It is sooo fun watching them twitch and nearly piss their pants. I must have been conceived through anal sex because being this much of an a-hole isn't natural!

I too have been experiencing back pain the last year and its horrible to live with. My pain seemed to be on the right side starting in my pelvis area then tuggin on the back if that makes sense. I truelly am sorry for those of you who can find any relief. I have tried a variety of treatments. I tried decompression chrio which didnt help, then "active release" chiro with slight relief. I then started using pain meds and was given 2 epideral shots after an mri showed "normal" degeneration on my L5/S1 disk. The epiderals did nothing for me and I felt myself getting addicted to the occycottine. I bought a Teeter Hangups inversion table that I continue to use to this day for the decompression effect. WHAT really has worked wonders for me was like a couple previous posters have mentioned was an INTENSE physical therapist that used deep tissue massage!!! The pain melted away and when the pain comes back (although never as strong), I put the wife to work on my hamstrings with her elbows. Also stretching my hamstrings helps big time. Did I mention prayer??? I really had to give ultimate control over this issue to God and prayed to find the right doctor/therepist before it ruined me. The back is a unique thing and like others have posted, what works for one guy may not work for another. Hope and pray you get better.

This is tough to live with. I hurt my back doing squats back in May of this year. I still feel it when I do certain things along with a pain through the hip / inner thigh. It's really set me back.

hello people; I was thinking and I know it's hard for me to do anyway. . That is try not to be so dominate to one side when anything from carrying a pale of water to digging a hole in your yard. I've been working on my foundation of my house for to long and after being bent over and using one arm and side almost all the time, thats when my problem hits the fan.

Back pain is extremely common in our mostly sedentary society and perhaps 80% of us will experience some degree of it at some point in our lives that is serious enough to limit our ability to do things we want. I have had good luck with more conservative treatment including lots of stretching, the use of foam rolling (myofascial release stuff..) to break up adhesions and scar tissue, along with core strengthening work at home and the gym.

If you are in pain, I would for sure exhaust all conservative modalities before considering going under the knife, and get a few opinions as well.. It might be worthwhile to work with a PT or someone familiar with biomechanics, and corrective exercise programs to help re-align things that may have changed in you over time (posture, muscular balance, etc..).

Obviously, a major herniation or severe pain can sometimes only be treated with surgery but most folks in my experience could benefit from better postural awareness and fairly simple changes in lifestyle to mitigate bad habits developed over time, or alignment issues from leg length discrepancies, hip alignment issues, foot problems, etc..

I am somewhat biased in that my scope of practice is mostly exercise and corrective exercise in nature - but it can and does work if you are willing to make the time to help yourself as opposed to taking pain medication or hoping that going under the knife will relieve your pain without addressing the fundamental reason your back hurts and got hurt in the first place.

Hope you get the help you need.
