People with old cars tend to be worried about internal engine cleaners that remove/loosen sludge. better for the sludge to stay put and not get loose to grind into bearing surfaces, etc.

Sea Foam top engine cleaner isn't designed to remove sludge from oil passages. It is designed for intake gunk, cylinder heads, and cylinder carbon deposits. I'm considering trying it on my TR to clean out a possible carbon problem that may be leading to knock. i know you have to be careful to have decent RPM (>2k) to avoid hydro-lock.

Any opinions (pro/con), other possible problems using a top-end cleaners, success stories? Thx.

I use seafoam on all my cars. Never any issues. Some results are "better" than others...

hello people; My thoughts about carbon buildup is fuel and hard driving. Get some good fuel in it maybe with some additive to fight the buildup and run it on the highway every now and then. City driving I think is the carbon problem.

i agree

I done the Seafoam bit a couple of times (using the GNTTYpe instructions I think) and have had great results.

Go for it.

hello people; Speaking of buildup I remember this stuff we put in a Fairland thru the carb. (I think) and all this white smoke came streaming out the exhaust for a while. The car ran better but who knows about the carbon.

I'm of the opinion that my Meth Injection will take care of any carbon buildup........................anyone???

remember it GM TEC used to be a part of a good spring cleaning. Since TEC is no more seafoam is the next best thing.

But it's probably not needed if you're a meth addict:D

It wont hurt anything. Anyone who tells you any different is simply misinformed.

I am currently starting a high end racing lubricant company, and the ingredients in Sea foam and GM's Top engine cleaner are identical so get the cheapest one you can find.

My personal "top end" cleaner regimen is 5 gallons of E85 in a full tank of your regular gas or 4 gallons of straight ethanol, and then 8-10oz of Marvel Mystery Oil in the same tank. The benzine in the MMO combined with the E85 really does a great job of cleaning. This mixture is safe for normal driving, but if your worried about your tune then add 5-6% more fuel WOT in your chip.

MMO and sea foam in your oil are also no problem... The ingredients in these products are all petroleum distillates and already present in your oil in moderate quantities. Sea Foam has Isopropyl alcohol in it, but other than that it's just naptha and light weight oil.

Like I said I am currently in the process of starting a new high end lubricant additive company, and I have done months if not years worth of research on this very subject. Most of the negative information about these products comes from either A) negative marketing or B) Ignorant people... and sometimes both. They are both quality products, and for years I have used both until I started making my own.

I know very little about E85 use in these cars, but have heard that switching completely to E85 requires some changes to seals and parts to avoid corrosion, etc. Is your recipe ok on seals, etc. due to the lower ethanol concentration and short duration (one tank) use of E85? I think the fuel around here is already 10% EtOH. Thx, I'll probably try it soon after the sea foam treatment.
