My brother is really into gaming, we had an interesting discussion about this. You can buy a house or strip mall in the game with real money and sell it for more than you bought it for to make a profit. You can have your video game character go into a store and try on/buy virtual clothes. If you like the way these clothes look on your character you can also order these clothes in real life.

From what I understand it is really a second life that you live on line and use real money for your character. Pay rent, buy clothes, date, etc. So if you own the store or land these characters are spending real money on you are making real money. It's some real strange stuff dude.

Yea, it just dont quite understand why someone would spend real money to buy fake items. Some are making $400-500 a day doing it tho. I just dont get it

They're beta testing your gullibility to enter into real stakes in the virtual world. A phenomena 'they' expect to be a growth market for those with unsatisfied creativity, and some money to be fleeced of, as the real world collapses around them and are increasingly unable to find satisfaction in. Those who find a need to 'hide' from a reality too damned to face and play fantasy roles they're unable to irl will be sucked in. It's a legal scam and the next hot ticket.

Beta testing? Its been around for 8 years with 13 million members. Id say beta testing has long passed.

Obviously I was mistaken about that part. But would you agree that as it becomes increasingly difficult to live meaningful lives that we'll see an increase in those wishing to fullfil themselves in the virtual world? Look around. Seems like they have growth potential to me! It's just taken longer than with facebook, because ones based on sharing real experience and the other's based on faking what you can't achieve.

I get into enough trouble on a damn Buick board I don't need anything virtual screwing with me :biggrin:

WOW ! That's what all the unemployed people do while I go to work.. Weirdo's, Go outside and enjoy the real world. .. Take a walk down a historic main street in your town or one close by. Buy a coffee .. Buy a hat ... maybe a new coat support a business in your neighborhood... You may find the girl at the coffe shop bring her car to you for repair because you were so nice or the the guy who sold you the hat .. Just sayin

Well, with all the gamers on this board (Adults) arent they playing in a virtual world as well? Its an escape from reality I guess. The difference being these people make money doing it. Ur still on ur computer for hours at a time no matter how u slice it.

I think it just takes people that are already at the edge of reality and pushes them...

I had to do a research paper on the virtual economy of online gaming once. In second life it was mostly layed off programmers that found out that people were willing to pay big to design everything from homes, interior, clothing, etc.

How To Make Money In Second Life

The online virtual world, Second Life, recently crowned it’s first real life millionaire. This milestone brings home the fact that virtual worlds with real economies are going to be a huge part of the internet’s future. Maybe bigger than YouTube in the same way that video games overtook the revenues of the film industry simply because players can interact with the story. In Second Life you are the story.

But the virtual economy goes back quite a ways, as soon as they started putting up dedicated servers that people could log into and interact with one another they immediately started trading virtual goods for real world currency. Ever hear the term Evercrack used for the game Everquest? Then there is World of Warcraft and that's when things really went nuts.

People started paying big dollars for virtual items and character accounts.

This is one of many websites that sells stuff for WoW: Buy WoW Accounts, Buy World of Warcraft Accounts - On SALE!

Characters go for hundreds to thousands of dollars, same things with "items". And some people will do really insane **** for this game:

Woman offers sex for an ingame animal to ride See pics here.

Then there are the sweat shops...Mexico, China, Vietnam, someone will buy a room full of computers and pay people next to nothing to play and accumulate items or ingame currency (ie gold), then they'll go and sell it online for real world currency and meet you ingame to do the transfer. Mining, grinding, it goes by a number of names.

I had a coworker that was divorced and paying insane child support and alimony, he'd get off work and go home and escape to WoW. He'd build up characters then turn around and sell them to make extra money.

Eve Online is another game with a thriving economy...there was an event where a player betrayed his group and netted ingame currency that held a real world currency of about $16K.

Its still Stupid. Get a real life.. go get laid.... something...

Stupid, maybe...I dunno. I think it's more dangerous than just being outright stupid. Online gaming has ruined allot of lives, caused broken families, ruined careers, etc. Some people get so immersed into the online culture that they lose touch with reality, they stop caring about themselves physically and things like hygiene, eating, etc. get tossed out the window.

Not too long ago there was a person in South Korea who died after playing online games for almost three days.

S Korean dies after games session

A South Korean man has died after reportedly playing an online computer game for 50 hours with few breaks.

Everquest, aka Evercrack was the first real eye opener to how addicting it becomes and dedicated rehabilitation facilities.

Anyone want to start buying some "online exclusive" Turbo Buick stuff;) I will sale you all you want:biggrin:
