Hey fellas I was hoping someone could help me out.

I need to know how exactally you measure shaft play, I just bought a used turbo that was advertised as no play and it seems to have some play...I don't know if it's because it's dry maybe it'll tighten up after some oil gets to it????

I've heard of some having what is called a little normal play when there is no oil in it. Could be that as the bearings expand with the heat and the shaft gets the film of oil it needs to ride on the play should be gone. I wouldn't play with it too much with out any oil in it.

I would say if you could slide it back and forth by putting a finger in the inlet bell then that would be excessive. My old turbonetics didn't move a bit. The new precision did move very slightly when dry.

HTH!

It does seem to have any end play just up and down...Thanks though, you put my mind at ease for now...I'll bolt it up and see what happens with oil in it.

All turbos I have ever seen have up and down play. Thrust play should be none IMHO. That is the sign I have seen before failure.

I had the very exact type of play you described. I sent it off to John Craig and let him decide. Turns out I did the right thing as he rebuilt my 51 to like new for around $370 shipped with a warranty. Might give you real piece of mind to let him check it. All it takes is for one of the wheels to contact a compressor wall.

That's almost as much as I paid for the thing...I'm gonna install it, get some oil in it and see what happens.

You'll be ok as long as there is no end play. I'd install it as is unless it shows oil leaking past the seals. If so you should rebuild it.

Or sell it to me for 50 bucks
