upon putting back together my short block i relized in the books (Chilton/ service manual) that our cars have a slinger between the crank and front cover.. when removing mine it didnt have one. should i proceed with out it or locate one?? al help is appreciated.. thanks Jeff...

I would use it, it helps lubricate the timing chain, keeps excessive oil away from the front seal and also properly spaces the balancer.
