Would be a lot cheaper than painting it and I can pick any design. I just got back from the Chicago car show at McCormick Place and one of the vendors who paints cars said it would cost $1000 for an 87 Regal. I found this website and there is a GN on it, just curser down. Does anybody know how they determine cost? Would a design cost more than just plain black? I should have asked the guy more questions than just price. Could this be a do it yourself job it it is just black or a simple design?

1k for plain black wrap? why not buy a few thoushand rolls of electrical tape :D

I vote you off the TB island.

wait till you have the 3k for a decent paint job.

I did not like any of those wraps even if you gave it to me FREE

What island do YOU live on? I have estimates closer to $5k for a paint job and that was a year ago. Probably $6k now!

Find someone to paint it on the side in this economy you can bargain. Apparently you must be in some expensive island!

Personally I don't know if you have a show car or a street car but if your wrapping it I am gussing street car.

I've heard too many horror stories about getting it painted on the side. It is a street car. Even if I got it painted, I was thinking of getting the checkered flag sticker put on the rear quarters......so why not just wrap the whole car in vinyl? Would be quick, inexpensive, and maybe even look good. There were a lot of vehicles wrapped at the Chicago Auto show and they were all real eye catchers. You know what would really be cool? If Molly designed the graphics!

I am a painter/ bodyman, and would not touch a car for under $5000 to do on the side. I have over $2000 just in materials in my Limited I am redoing right now, and this is after my discount from my suppiler. Materials have gone way up, and continue to climb, and these cars are alot of work to do correctly. Sure, I can buzz a car down, mask with newspaper and paint with some cheapo dupli color paint shop, but it will look like crap, and then cost even more when the owner decides to have it done right.

I dunno but lots of shops are hurting. If you can let them have the car for awhile they could prolly work on it in the slow periods when things slow down.

I know a guy who does paint at his body shop & will accomodate people on a budget.

But then again if your wrap is not to GAWDY looking then it sounds like a good deal.

So how busy are you at 5k a pop currently? are the people lining up at your door?

Good for you. :D You must not have been hit with the bad economic times as much as some others have.

Paint jobs are expensive guys. 3K gets you bare minimum at best. I got quoted 1200 to re-shoot a quarter panel with some very minor body work "on the side".

A lot depend on many factors..

what is underneath the currnt paint.

What metod of removal is used or if it is ofk to be a paintover.

Is the car for show or street.

too many variabiles to get into arguments. I do know the prep work takes a lot. the actual shooting is not that hard.

There are guys in this site that won't even pay $7k to buy a TB. I don't see them spending $5k on it for just paint.

My paint job was $5k (car is a driver) and to be honest, it should have cost me more than that. The material alone was high as hell. Prep was a chore even on a car that had virtually zero body work needed. Cutting, buffing, polishing, etc. after paint was very time consuming. Bad economy or not, my painter has cars lined up out the shop waiting for anything from "good paint jobs" like what I had done, to full on body-off, frame up restos / resto mods. And this is in an area that was waaay ahead of the economic sh!t-storm curve.

That said, you might can find someone who will willingly work for less money right now. I'm sure not every shop out there is slammed with tons of work.

The wrap may be good, but maybe not. I don't have any personal experience with them. But the stuff is basically printed vinyl. Vinyl is a pain in the @$$ to remove and I've only done that in strips such as stripes or accents. I couldn't imagine the pain factor on removing it from an entire car.

Either way you go, good luck and keep us updated.

wraps and a lifetime of it

how long would i wrap that these sign guys make? i've seen plenty and just wonder what's the life expency of a wrap? i personally wouldn't want to wrap my car but to each his own.

I say that a tastefully done job (paint, mural, stripe, wrap, plaid, whatever) adds individuality. Otherwise your car looks like 1000 others at the events.

That said, it would be easy to overdo it.....

Go for it,

Bob

why not just do some basic body work, get the big dents out and some dings and then get the car murdered out( satin black primer) with some clear so it doesn't stain easily

You boys are getting ripped for "side" paint jobs then...

For a "shop" job for A+ #1 quality it is going to cost you $5-$6K I agree!

However I know some guys that can do a damn respectable job for $2k if the body isn't crap...

Harold, you need a new supplier for your materials. I can guy them here and ship them to you cheaper than that:eek:

Most of the people who get the bargain jobs are not happy. I am not saying there are not cheaper materials, or short cuts on prep work, but most of the people who want their car painted by me expect it to look like my personal car, and doing it for cheaper won't make it happen. If I even go $4000 on a full on job, I am left with $2000 to pay my labor, gas bill, electric bill, and I will have a good 2 months working nights and weekends. That isn't worth my trouble.
As far as taking advantage of slow shops, all you are getting are pi$$ed of flat rate techs working on your car that would rather go home than spend 8 hours fixing a panel and getting paid 4hours. Cheaper materials can be used, only accounting for afew hundred off the final bill, but the labor time will get cut making up for the other thousands, This is why resto's sit in shops for years, no one wants to work on them. When someone finally does, they are either the shop hourly guy, or a pi$$ed off tech who won't do it right. People have no problem paying big bucks for an engine, that can be built in 1 day, and most of the machining involves pushing a button. No one wants to pay for a high quality paint job that everyone will actually see, and takes 150+ hours to do correctly. The shop I work at has a resto only guy, which works great. Restos are so time consuming, they cannot be mixed with insurance jobs, you need to stay on them, or they become overwhelming working on here and there. We charge good money, not the lowest, but not the absolute highest in area either. I would bet we are set with resto jobs into next year. None of these jobs are under $10,000. People will pay, and in the end they are happy, which can't be said about the people who had someone else do the job for cheaper.

Around here if you want a REAL nice paint job you are talking a min or 5k up to 15-20 for killer. now it may be less these days with the economy as i have not had a car painted in forever.
the other thing about some of the GNs is if the paint it check or cracking it will need to be stripped down to bare metal with a whole nother cost

I was wondering how vinyl stands up to rock chips and over all weather, time, rain, sun, etc. I wonder what my insurance agent would say if I told him my car got dented and I need the panel repaired and "re-wrapped". A Ford rep at the car show said not to take the car to the do it yourself car wash as the wand has too much pressure. She recommended hand washing only.
