Anyone here had a rotator surgery or replacement? I just got back from the MRI place and will know more in a few days. My right shoulder has been messed up since the military and has only got worse with age and gym time. I'm dreading the idea of going under the knife and am interested in hearing back from those who have had a shoulder repair or replacement. I'm wanting to get an idea of recovery time and what all you went through.

TIA

I've had full shoulder surgery not once but twice. The first time was traditional and the second time was arthroscopic surgery with a nerve block. Get the nerve block, trust me, it made all the difference in the world. The doctor told me the only thing holding my arm in place was my bicep tendon, my labrum was totally detached, and my tendons were all torn. I couldn't sleep on my left side for 10 years. After the 2nd surgery I am like a new man, total use of my arm again. I get a little stinger here and there but it's pretty damned good.

The first surgery may have worked if a big redneck didn't decide to assault 1 month afterwards, he tore my pins loose and destabilized my shoulder which caused it to pop out all the damned time. I probably have dislocated my shoulder, to where my arm is sitting on my chest, about 75 times, and it's popped out slightly about 200 times, maybe more.

With the 2nd surgery recovery time, to where my shoulder felt better than when I went in was about 5 days, no lie. It still hurt to move it, but with it in a sling I could already tell it was better by the 3rd day. As far as full movement and no pain it was about 3 weeks total. The arthroscopic surgery was a lot faster to recover from. The nerve block really made it easier as well, I can't stress how important the nerve block was. It keeps your arm completely numb for the first 18-24 hours and without it the pain is extreme, I won't lie.

I've had both shoulders done, right at 16 and left at 21. My left is due for another but I am putting it off as long as I can. Not to bad of surgery, but no fun for sure. For me it was a good 3 weeks before I could move it to much, then another 6 probably before it really didnt hurt. You'll be out of the gym for a good 4-6 months though.

I have had it twice and have been told I will need a third:mad:.

Surgery rarely seems to benifit anyone other then the surgeons pocket. The recovery is horrible. If you can function without it I would pass on surgery.

Let me clarify on my recovery times.

By day 3, no movement, I could tell with it resting in a sling it was better than prior to surgery. My arm was totally thrashed prior to surgery, to the point that it was total discomfort all the time unless I had my arm in a very weird position. I didn't let anyone touch my arm and everyone I knew had set it a time or two, I even had to call over the neighbor once.

By week 3 it felt great, I had movement, but I am talking about small movement with no pressure or weight. It took about 90 day to feel mostly normal and 6 months to be better than I could remember in 10 years.

Thanks for the info fellas, that's what I'm looking for. I've been putting this off since 1993 and am now at the place where I feel it needs to be done. The getting woke up at night and the lack of overall use and strength in the right shoulder has gone to crap! What I'm seeing now is the shoulder damage is affecting my wrist and grip??? I should hear something back from the doc by the end of the week....can't wait for that call.:frown:
