OK guys,

I have been looking at pics of GN's and TR's and I've noticed that some of those cars are running with single exhaust. Now, I've always heard that dual exhaust is better because is causes for the motor to breath better. Does it matter, is it a choice of preference or a turbo trick for better performance? I currently have dual exhaust with a cutoff exhaust as well. Any thoughts anyone would like to share?

single exhaust drone.

I have a 3 inch single exhaust with a hooker max flo muffler. It does drone, it doesnt bother me much really. If my car was quiet, it'd be nice but i dont have any plans to spend money on a new exhaust that works fine for me.

When i do drive it, i usually have the dump open, unless im on a long trip or have people in the car and dont wanna talk over the exhaust.

If i had to choose to get an exhaust as of now, i'd get the dual exhaust.

Breathe better with dual? Doubt it

Its a preference, and sometimes weight reduction too. Search on the topic, many have asked.

My Torque Tech 3" dual system recently rotted out and after much debate I replaced it with a 3" single shot. I haven't installed it yet but I should have it by the end of the week.

I don't care about loud, I just want the exhaust to come out the back of the car. Seems silly to add a bunch of weight and complexity to the system when it's a single pipe to begin with.

It may not look as good, but if cared about looks I wouldn't be driving a 1987 Buick :p

I have an ATR 3in. stainless steel "Single Shot" system on my car and I'm very happy with it. It has very little restriction and I managed to run mid 10's through the exhaust. It's true that I'd like it to be a little quieter, but since it is not an everyday driven car, I can live with that. At first, the single exhaust pipe looked a little strange to me, but now that I've had it for several years, I don't notice it anymore and couldn't care less about having two exhaust pipes...Like "turbojimmy" said in the previous post, it's a single pipe to begin out of the turbo with so what benefit is there in splitting it in two pipes after the catalytic converter? It ( single pipe) gets the job done so keep it as simple as possible!

Claude.

Mine splits into two via a Y type flange a little after the downpipe , there are two dynomax race mufflers (you can see right thru them) right before the rear axle, then the dual 2.5" pipes go over the rear axle and exit in the normal location.

It seems it would flow like crazy because you can see right thru the mufflers and there are no cats (just kidding EPA), and its pretty darn quiet.

Aside from increased quiet, duals on a turbo car just seem fake to me. Who are we kidding---TR's need only a single pipe from a single turbo. Our cars don't have true duals, so cut the weight and costs, and get a single. Now if your into the show thing, put on duals and tell'um you have twin turbos.

A while back I hated single shot exhausts but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. A dual exhaust on a GN isn't "true" dual anyway since it all comes from the downpipe. Having a dual system just means more weight. And when the exhaust flow exits the downpipe and comes to the Y-pipe I would imagine the velocity of the exhaust flow suffers a lot when you give it two 2.5" or 3" paths to choose from, it can just lazily go whichever way it wants. I think it makes more sense to have a single shot system in the same diameter as your downpipe to keep everything flowing smoothly.

As others have already mentioned the single shot exhausts are notorious for droning and being annoying to listen to so it depends on how much that kind of thing bothers you.

dual 3" are quieter.. they flow fine on Melissa's car :p ya she runs threw the exhaust ;)

i have atrs dual 2 1/2 exhaust and its a really nice piece. i think its one of the best exhaust systems made. its quiet till you get on it then she just sounds mean. my brother has atr's dual 3 inch and i think its louder then my 2 1/2 at cruise but at idel and full throttle they sound the same. ATRs single 3 is just loud but it sounds great. i think as long as you have a good quality system with some straight flow thhrew mufflers you will be good.

i have duals but a single makes more sense to reduce weight but i like the looks of duals but thats just me. i think it comes down to a weight savings vs what you like cost could factor in there somewhere too.

Ditto, If you have the cut out open down the track, you have already reduced a ton of the restriction.

I am most likely going to get a single shot exhaust. Its much lighter than the dual.

Good info to know from all of you. For now I'm keeping my dual exhaust look until they go down hill.

hay grumpy, what type of mufflers are you running? i know you may not like telling your secrets ;) , i just got my car back and i don't want to make the mistake of installing mufflers that will bogg me down, i'm hopeing to go low-low 10's or high 9's any advice will be appreciated.

i have the ATR's also...love the sound, and have a cut out for the track.....not really worried about weight....how much could it weigh?

German, spend the $$$ on other mods for now.:D BTW: where'd you get that info in your sig;) Trans still shifting good?:)

Check my sig, 3" THDP, Stock exhaust manifolds with some re-inforcing, 2.5" ATR pitbull stainless exhaust (duals), nothing better for a street car. Great sound, AMAZING performance, stock manifolds are just fine, you get much better spool-up. No need to look elsewhere or spend anymore.

Have run the car with the plate removed (open header) and running through the exhaust, no difference in times.

3" off downpipe, into 3" cat, no muffler, exit before passenger rear wheel, light and loud
