What are the downsides of a solid cam in weekend street/strip car?

No experience in a solid in a SII but the ones I have had experience with is a little (sometimes a lot) more noise and adjustments every once in a while when they loosen up.

EDIT: sometimes worth it for the extra throttle response though.

Any issues setting of the KR sensor due to the noise of a solid? I remember reading some had issues with it, others did not.

Hey Tom my setup is with solid roller but it's not in the car yet, there are few others that have done the samething. I don't think you will have any issues other than a little more noise and once in a while a little adjustment. To make good power and spin the motor to 7K plus, you would need to go that route.
