Sound off if you're using an LT-70 turbo on the street

I'm looking into a turbo upgrade and can't seem to make up my mind. I'm leaning towards an LT-70 turbo from John Craig. If you are running this turbo on the street, what is your combo as far as injectors, stall speed, and intercooler? Are you using a single pump or double pumper? I've checked the archives and seem to find quite a bit of disagreement about whether a single Walbro 340 would be enough pump or not. Currently I'm running a 3000 stall converter. I'm thinking this would likely not be enough stall?? I can use some opinions here.

Since you're looking for opinions I'll give mine. A 70 is a very big turbo to run on the street. I hope you have some very sticky tires. A friend of mine breaks 'em loose at 45 with pump gas, no alky, and probably knocking pretty badly. At last I heard he had 42.5 lb. injectors with 2 more ( of unknown flow ) attached to the up-pipe. I think the usual would be 72 pounders. I would agree that the 3,000 is a little too small for a 70. Getting it re-stalled to 3,400 or so would do the trick. If you go the 70 route be prepared for loss of traction at any time you go WOT. I started to get a 70 for mine, but with new injectors, modding the computer, plus a new chip I just stayed with a 60 series. It's good for over 700 hp so I have no worries of maxing it out.

You will need atleast 72 lbs injectors, and a double pumper. Stall speed on the converter should atleast be 3500. The intercooler can be anything from a big stock location to a front mount, that is simply preference.

HTH,
Alex

If you keep the 3000 stall you "might" be able to control the tires spin alittle better.

I have a BB70 Qtrim with a Vigilante 0 pump (3200-3500) and a .82 Garret housing and it spools like lightning. I think the trick is the ball bearing and the Max Effort R. Before this combo I had a TE45a and it was a dog in the spool department.
If you plan on using a 70, then you're going to need at least 72's, a double pumper, and 3700 stall converter. That's the bare minimum. If you don't plan on getting all of these then don't get a 70mm turbo. It's that simple.

Where did you purchase that turbo from?

72# injectors and double pumpers are a must. For the street i would go with a p trim exhaust wheel in a.63 PTE housing.

My LT70 GTQ exhaust wheel (PTE .81 housing) is awesome. A little slow spooling for me but its all in the converter. Its only about 3400-3500 stall.

In my opinion you need a min of 3600-3800 for it to spool right. As long as you get a converter from a reputable vendor and a lock up unit, the high stall wont matter much.

That's me! In the sig...... perfect street car! Never too much for the street! I have just like stock streetability!

Just to hijack this a bit....

Anyone install one of those without a cam. or ported heads?

Double-ditto those points!

Gotta love those Lock-Ups! :)

Hopefully soon I will have an LT-70. I only have a 208-208 ISKY cam with heads that only have gotten a 3 angle valve job. I want to see how far I can go with unported heads.:)

RED FROM RICHMOND---WHERE ARE YOU?

( Red can add lots of info on running a 70...C'mon Red! :) )

I have stoke head, cam,TB, All that LT-70 MSD 75's And ONE 340 pump 93oct no alky 750 02's no kr PTS 3600 stall ESP FM, No track times this year yet,
Thanks,

Thanks, I only have 55's as well.

Double ball bearing with a 3200 stall lockup. :)

Gonna try it with the alky. and some 94, single Walbro pump.

Work the boost up slow at the track and see what happens. :D

Salvage, you'll run out of fuel, guaranteed. Be very careful with the boost.

Alan, the 55's will be fine with unported heads and stock cam. You should be able to handle 120mph trap speeds. If you put a set of ported irons, a bigger cam and a FM you should upgrade to 72's

We shall see, will be using Direct Scan to record all the runs. :)

I think 23 psi. might be obtainable.

But the way things are going with parts, I might have to race with the 62 on there, which would probably be smarter anyway. ;)

hey ben, just my personal opinion here for what its worth, i think the T70 would be a bit too much for the street, a better choice would be a turbonetics TE 60-1 BB turbo with this turbo you dont even have to change your convertor, just have them make it a little lose, and perhaps some 72 pounds injectors would be for the calling, and you would probably be just fine with a single hotwire fuel pump, i think this combo would kick a** and not give you much of a problem with traction and it would really make ur car way faster than it already is, also it would compliment your cam and your ported heads nicely.

good luck.

it makes no sense at all to run a turbo like an LT-70 on a street car unless your street car has slicks and race gas at all times, not to mention a 3600+ stall converter

for reasonable street use, I would think a 60 would be about the biggest you would want....the "best" overall street turbos are undoubtedly the TA-49/TE-44......the only way anything bigger will go faster is in full on race trim

most folks can hit mid-high 11's with a 49/44 in race trim.....if you wanna go faster than that, you don't have a "street" car anymore!
