ok it's not a buick but maybe someone can help. i bought a 96 olds 88 with a super 3.8 and drove it a day when it started knocking. i took it back to the dealer who is fixing it, but my question is how reliable will it be when i get it back, is this something i need to keep in mind while driving it. i know their doing as little as possable to fix it so i want to be prepaired if something else is to happen. should i just rebuild it anyway? any input would help thanks

if it spun a bearing they have to rebuild it....

why did it spin a bearing? the lower intake manifold gaskets have been known to fail...if thats the case they you may be able to get GM to split the repair bill with you

i don't know why it spun a bearing i never put it into high r's, i took it on the freeway to see how it did but that's the worst that i put it through, i had it a day and drove it 50 miles, about a block from my house it almost died at a red light then started knocking. i highly dought their going to rebuild anything that's what worries me

They've got to tear it down to remove the bad rod/piston and a crank kit at least, a new oil pump, while it's out tell them to put a new waterpump on(that will be your expense) but only for the part because the labor for teardown is already on them.

ok, so the dealer ain't doing **** cuz of some totally bull **** reasons so i guess i'm doing it myself, i'm thinking crank kit, a rod maybe two, and a gasket kit, and while i'm at it a oil pump, the water pump sounds like a good idea too it was running a little hot and i couldn't figure it out but i only drove it for 50 miles, any suggestions would be appreciated

no there was no coolant in the oil, i was going to change the thermostat but the rod knocks was a little more important, i figured while i was taking the whole thing apart some new parts wouldn't hurt
