Its a 86 T Type, reset the pcm, no codes are coming up. The start up idle is fine, but after 2 seconds the car sputters and just dies out. Checked fuel pressure, has spark. I think we are loosing injector pulse. We are thinking it may be the cam sensor or the computer, but would like more opinions.

How much is a typical cam sensor going to cost for this car? We are seeing that its a special order part. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Anti theft chip?
Huge vacuum leak?
Any work done on it lately? When did it start doing this?

Thanks for the responses. It doesn't have a anti theft, vacuum is fine, and we tryed to uplug the MAF and it didn't do anything.

The car was running perfect. We put it away for winter, and started it up a couple of times. No new work was done to it. It occured out of no where while it was put away. The car does start, runs fine for those 2 seconds and then dies.

If we put it on Back up Fuel and Spark using the snap on diagnostics computer, it will start up and idle but wont accelerate properly.

Please answer the posed question.

When did this start happening? What prompted it? Work? changes?

Oh, and DO NOT TRY ACCELERATION in that mode on the scanner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is for stationary testing only.

As posted ontop, it started happing out of no where while the car was parked over winter. We started it up a couple of times and it ran fine. Didn't touch it for a month, went to start it and take it out and thats when it started happening. No new work was done to it.

No, we haven't checked the cam sensor yet. We are thinking its either that or the computer, but would like to hear what you guys may think before spending $$ on the cam sensor.
Do you guys happen to know how much a cam sensor for this car should go for?

$69.95
Casper's Electronics, Inc.: Cam Sensor Cap Only 1984 / 1989

You don't have to replace it to find out if it's the culprit. Just unplug it. If the cam sensor is the problem, the engine will start and run in limp-home if you disconnect it. Connected, a bad sensor will cause the car to run like crap and/or die after 2 seconds.

The car operates the injectors in batch mode during cranking and the first two seconds. After that, it switches to sequential, which requires a valid cam sensor signal. Bad cam sensor signal and the injectors don't fire, and predictably, the car dies.

Just tryed unplugging the connector going to the cam sensor. It wont start up at all like this. Plugged it back in, and car starts up no problem, then dies after 2 seconds.

If it is the cam sensor, all I would need is the cap from Caspers?

The Commander chips have an anti theft feature. Even if you had that feature turned off, it will reset to "on" when you remove ecm power, or the battery dips too low.
Unless you know for sure that you ordered the chip with no anti theft feature.

But your symptoms certainly are those of an anti theft feature.

Yes, the car absolutely will not start with the cam sensor unplugged. The fact that the car starts at all indicates the cam sensor is probably OK. Even if it were way out of adjustment, the car should start and continue to run.

Just got of the phone with the tech guy at Caspers Electronics and had us go through a few things, and it seems like it is going to be the ignition module or the computer. Cam sensor is ok.

What's the part number on your commander chip please.

When my ignition module failed, the car would not start at all. Another source for the cam sensor is Autozone, for $40. But of course you don't get tech support like you do from Caspers.Actually if you find someone at Autozone who even knows what a GN is, you're ahead of the game.

I'd still like to know what the part number is on that Commander chip.
