a friend and I where arguing over whether or not g-bodies in (79-81) came with a 4 speed stick. I personally never seen one or heard of this combo,he showed a pic of an 80 monte, but the dash I noticed immediatly was converted as was the rest of the interior too a 87-88 style. In the console was a stick, done nice, but too me looked put together by the owner or whomever. anyone have any feed back let us know.

Yes.

A bud owns two 79 malibus that came from the factory with a saginaw 4spd. His dad bought one new off the lot and my bud came back the next week and bought the other one.

Base model malibus could be had with a 3spd stick too. He picked up a stripper/V6 car (no options) for parts several months ago from the original owner. V6, 2bbl, 3spd on the floor, no power anything, AM radio, and turd slow but its kinda cool in a way cause its such an odd ball car.

I had a '79 Grand Prix SJ with a 4 speed. They made 232 in '79.

It was coupled to a 301/4bbl. If it had a 305 instead, I'd probably still own the car. The 301 was a boat anchor. I lost a race to a modified VW bug on the street in the 80's.

They didn't come with a console that went around the shifter, though. Mine was ordered with every option but sunroof ($9K+ Sticker) and the shifter and came out of the floor, but the console (glovebox) was between the seats. Sounds like they modified an Auto Console.

My uncle has '79 El Camino with the 229/3 speed & gage package.

The clutch pedal setup is probably worth more than the entire car.

UNGN, I remember seeing a 4 speed GP SJ when they were new. This one had the factory wire wheels and dual exhaust. The exhaust was the same as our GN style but with the "flattened-oval" ends. The dash layout was all business. Neat car!

Mine had body color (bronze) snowflakes and Leather Buckets.

The Dash is about the same as my '86 Aerocoupe GP with a big speedo/tach and lots of gages. The 4 speeds were a "close ratio" 2.23:1 1st gear with a 2.73:1 rear gear, so you had to do a lot of clutch slipping to get the car moving.

A T5 with 3:42 gears would have made a world of difference.

The 301 just plain sucked though. It was weak thru out the power band. Accelleration was so slow, you never got the "accelleration dropping off, shift me" cue. I was constantly floating the valves (at about 5400 RPM) holding a gear, trying to keep up with traffic. :)

It looked good on paper, though. And back then the 18 mpg it got was stellar.

thanks guys, funny how a weird question can get answers. anyway does anyone have pics or copies of dealer list or anything with this option. sorry for being a pain in the ass.

Never seen one of those.

And also a Regal...

No one mentioned a Buick so far! :)

A local collector had a 1979 Regal with a V-6 and floor-mounted 4 speed that I drove. He also had the original window sticker to verify its authenticity. Cannot remember how many he said were built, but VERY few.

Thanks for the Pictures, that's the same console my Grand Prix had.

The logic of offering the manual transmission was that it was the "base" transmission. If you wanted an Auto, they could get another $1000 out of you. So they'd advertise the car for $1000 less than their competitors and you didn't see it was a 3 speed until you were already in the salesman's clutches.

They didn't make many, because a dealer only needed one :)
