I might have missed a thread about this but people should check this out and hopefully we can get this track opened back up. I was there yesterday. Alot of clean-up needs to be done before May 3rd. Sponsors and food vendors are needed for the first event. The track still looks good for sitting for over 20 years. Job well done in 1970 by the owners that built this place. Read about this on the website for the people putting on the show. New Covenant Performance, Inc. Classic Auto Restoration and Parts Please tell all your friends and lets try to get this place up and running again. We are also looking for used guard rails for the sides of the track if anyone can help??

Here's the official release I wrote for Greg:

THE RETURN OF MOTION RACEWAY!

Dormant for just under a quarter-century, Motion Raceway in Assumption, Illinois, is set to reopen on Sunday, May 3rd, 2008. The site of many fuel match races and the breeding ground of more than a few national sportsman stars, track owner John Jones closed the facility at the conclusion of the 1984 season after fifteen years of operation. However, Jones has given Greg Clayton of New Covenant Performance in Mt. Auburn, Illinois, the opportunity to conduct muffled street car competition at Motion in an eighth-mile format. The track was originally a quarter-mile strip but moved to a thousand-feet configuration when its three thousand-feet total length became insufficient.

Clayton, who operates NCP with parents Steve and Sherry, will maintain a street car grudge racing atmosphere at the track during the five dates afforded by Jones. Since there is no electricity to the property, no timing system will be used. Clayton has already aquired insurance, safety equipment and portable restrooms and is currently soliciting food vendors equipped with generators. Scott Gardner and Taz Hines of Cordova Dragway Park have offered some of the remaining guardrail from their track's installation of concrete walls and Clayton is already accepting sponsors for the new program. For information to become involved and for details of the events, go to New Covenant Performance, Inc. Classic Auto Restoration and Parts or contact Greg Clayton directly at 217-676-2660.

Motion Raceway is located three miles north of Assumption and 1.1 miles west of Illinois Route 51 on the south side of East 1500 North Road.

The write up looks good except May 3rd is a Saturday not Sunday. I will be there. Thanks .

It's the first track I ever went down.
I think it was 1,000 ft. then.

Tony, keep us posted as this draws nearer. If I can get my junk ready in time I'll be there. I think its only about a half hour from the father-in-laws campsite in Findley so I've got a place to crash. Sounds like a good time.. Maybe I can get a group together from up here in Rockford.

I have been talking with the people putting this on and it is still a go weather permitting. Get your cars ready. They have had phone calls from people that heard of the track opening back up from all over the US. I think it will be an awesome event.
