Not sure this is the best place to put this question about the street outlaw cars.

When they stage and bring the car up on boost then inch the car forward. What are they staging on? I know they are not foot braking it. Can you come on and out of a trans brake like that?

I have never been around cars like that. The last time I was around a drag car is was a super comp car and it had a transfer brake and a delay box.
A lot of cars have a way to pulse width modulate(PWM) the trans brake solenoid to bump the cars forward(often known as Creep). I know at least the Fast XFI has this capability and I'm sure other brand boxes have something similar.
AG.

Thanks. That's makes sense because the suspension is unloaded and you can watch the car kinda rock.

It's what people refer to as a bump box. It's a trans brake interupt that pulses the trans brake solenoid as turbobitt described. You engage the brake and once the car is up on the 2 step, you push a second button that lets the car bump forward. Some are much smoother than others.

I just began using the creep feature in XFI and very happy with how smooth it works.
