I could build you a stock appearing turbo that will support quite a bit more power than a ta49 but the stock compressor housing isnt ideal for it. It would be a milled forged compressor wheel that flows around 70lbs/min in an s cover. You would need a t350 or 76p turbine to keep the back pressure down. I could do it with a Garrett .63 ex housing also for quicker spoolup.

Some run a ta49/te44 with stock converter using a Garrett ex housing but it's still lagier than stock. The turbine and ex housing will determine the spoolup for the most part on the small Garrett t04e based turbos. Bigger heavier turbines that flow more in ex housings with larger a/r need a higher stall speed down low. They also need to be couple with a matching compressor that will complement the mass flow needs of the engine. Turbos support mass flow. They don't make power or everyone that bolted a turbo that flows 100lbs/min would make 1000+hp.
Idk exactly what it will do because people dont usually try and use a compressor wheel that has that much potential in a stock cover. Its like owning a 1000hp car and having a throttle limiter on it so it only ever gets to about 750hp. If comparing a stock appearing to a stock appearing or T04e to T04e or T04s04 to T04s04 id estimate that there is at least 60-70hp more potential with the T04S04 cover over a stock cover and probably just about that with the e cover. If you stuffed in a 76p ex and ran the milled forged wheel im suggesting vs an old 44 or 49 it would be at least 115hp more potential. Youre looking at an estimated 65lbs/min stock appearing with the milled forged wheel and a 76p vs 53-55lbs/min with the TA49 or TE44. Your engine has to have that mass flow potential or you wont see power with a different compressor. Fwiw i plan on getting 72lbs/min out of that little wheel on one of my engines using the bigger compressor cover and a .85 3 bolt ex housing. So over 700hp. That same engine reached about 78lbs/min with a 6265s cea (dynoed 697whp) and has been over 80lbs/min@25psi with a 70GTQ (138+mph@3600lbs). It also made 592whp with an old cast 60-1so comparison wise what will a te44/49 vs your stock appearing bigger turbo do hp wise
You are limited to about 66.5 mm on the inducer before you are getting paper thin on the inlet. I could have one made that is 66.5mm and still has the T series back on it. It woudl be hampered by the small diffuser. I wouldnt expect too much more if any out of it to be honest. When the compressor housing is done its done. It just choke flows the compressor and the drive pressure goes up rapidly. Running a larger ex a/r will cause it to lose boost. Some things just arent meant to beWell here's the third B4black guy jumping in here.What would be the largest compressor wheel you could put in a stock 86-87 housing? Not looking at efficency as much as total volume of flow though, hypothetical of course.

Cut that foot off and fab up something and fab up a plenum style single plane and you will have more to work with. Ive never seen one of those come close to a stock 86-87 turbo. 38lbs/min on the tbo348 equals 11.80@3600lbsAs I'm sure you figured out the 301 and the 86-87 housing are close but the 301 units are slightly bigger.It's the same AR and we've got the infamous "foot" to deal with but I was hoping to see if there's something bigger than the 60-1 compressor wheel that might work on them.
