TE-60's exhaust housing Q's

Whats going on guys...I've got a TE60 turbo that I got used..I was told that its two years old and was on a G/N for the 1st year and sat for the next year do to an upgrade ...
The guy I got it from took the 0.63 A/R exhaust housing off and got a new 4 bolt exhaust housing from PTE.....
Ok here's the thing...the 0.63 A/R housing for the G/N looks like new on the out side with just a little light rust in two small spots but where the turbo's blades would go its a little more rusty with some pitting....
Is this normal ? ..I paid $410.00 with both exhaust housing and the turbo looks new....Have any of ya's seen this befor....Thanks for the help

Yes, that rusting is normal. Leaded race gas and carbon deposits will take their toll on the inside of the housing. You might want to hit it with some scotch brite pads and some PB Blaster. That should clean it up enough where it could be run. After you clean it up, install it and check shaft play and see if it rotates freely and does not bind on any remaining rust spots. If it spins freely when you spin it, and by pulling the rotating assembly over to one side and rotating it, then over to the other and rotating it and it has no in and out play, I'd run it. Don't forget to clock the turbine housing correctly then tightening the bolts up hand tight in a criss cross fashion before installing it. You will need to verify that the turbo you are going to install it on, does indeed have a T31 Stage 3 turbine wheel as the housings are cut to match the contour of the turbine wheels blades. Most all TE-60s should have that turbine wheel. You will know when you got to install the housing onto the turbo if it will fit or not. The rust on the inlet of the turbine housing will be hardest to remove.

Well last night I took a small wire wheel to the insides of the housing as well as the out side too..
I had to use my very old camera to take these pics the boy did something with the good one...

As for clocking the turbine housing I was reading up on that last night too ....The oil drain is at the top and the oil feed is at the bottom...So I got to spin that around

Wow, very impressive clean up. I would still check for signs of rubbing when you install it. But it cleaned up rather nicely.

One last thing guys..When the turbo had the new 4 bolt exhaust housing on it had 0 movement... and now with the 0.63 A/R exhaust housing there is just a very very very small movement left and right.
Other then that... it rotates freely and does not bind and 0 in and out play

O-yea I did pull the rotating assembly over to one side and rotating it, then over to the other and rotating it
and it spins just fine not touching anything !!

I think it will be ok what do you guys think...

You will have slight side to side play. Remember, when in operation the shaft floats on a cushion of pressurized oil, so what you are seeing are the bearing clearances to the shaft. As long as the wheels don't rub and you have no in and out play, and it isn't puking oil, I'd run it.

Rusted Housing.

Thank you Patrick for bringing up the LEADED RACE FUEL as being the cause of the rusted out exhaust housing. A couple of years back i mentioned that RACE FUEL rusted the inside of the housing on the turbo's and was told by some know it all race fuel expert on this board that i was full of crap and did not know what i was talking about. That one look's good compared to mine that only see's leaded race fuel, hell, i had to send it to Precision to have the shaft removed out of the housing cause it was almost welded together by the rust. But, yea, i know, it's not the LEADED RACE GAS it's the water from the blown head gasket.
