That word should not be used anywhere in the work place by anyone. Yet some take offense to other races that use it (understandable) but think it's ok if they refer to their friends and so forth as such. That cop should have lost his job the second time it was used.

Ok. I can understand friends while OFF duty throwing out the "N" word out. You are right, it is socially accepted within their community. Movies, rap songs, etc...

Put a uniform on and you now represent the entire PD as well as every other Police officer in any PD. That's the real issue as far as I am concerned. I Don't use the word. EVER! Not around friends or enemies.

The 1st. ammendment is not the issue here. It's when and where the use of a word that is considered to be derragative is used. There are plenty of black people that are utterly offended by the use of the "N" word in any arena at any time. Bill Cosby being one. You can't pick and choose when a word like that is acceptable when in uniform.

I have close friends and family members that use it all the time. They will never hear me use it.

Not to mention there are people who are half black and half white and many mixes inbetween. Should they be tollerant to the use of that word because they are partially black?

No matter where you work the use of the "N" word is an automatic termination notice with no recourse with any attorney or state labor board. Why is he treated any different while at work? Cause he's black?

If a white guy uses the work "Cracker" or the "N" word at work he is subject to the same punishment except a suspension is unlikely. Termination is.

Can you imagine a citizen catching a black Police Captain on video using the "N" word and posting it on YouTube? I can assure you that there would be no activists coming to his aid and Larry King would not be talking about it.

That word reprents HATE. Black or white no one should be promoting it. For those that do. Shame on you.

If you don't enforce the rules equally you have people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton putting ralleys together. Right? This is no different.

Was he in uniform when he said it? Wasn't it a private conversation between 2 people?

The word represents hate. To you, to me and to many others but, not entirely in the black community.

Both of my brothers are officers and I'm around officers often. Believe you me that they are far from the robotic perfect cops in a private environment. Much like this guy was in with his barber.

White guys can get fired for saying cracker? If that is true then that there is a true double standard compared to this Captain.

I never said it was ok for him to say it on duty. I'm saying if he is off duty and in a private conversation thats different.

You know I'm pro cop, but they are some of the biggest hypocrites out there. Judges too.

I'm willing to bet that his barber is black. Doesn't mean its right, but certainly more understandible. If we are going to suspend or fire people by what they say in private there would be no more police or fire departments.

Why was he recorded? Maybe he has a history of saying the N word. If so, then he should be fired. The story in the link was short. I'd like to hear more of his background and service.

IMO, it's all about context. Every race has a negative term that applies to its trashy members. The ever dreaded "N-word" happens to be one of those terms. And when the shoe fits, I have zero problem with calling a spade a spade. This guy might have been referring to some useless POS of a human who qualified for the term. However, even IF that happens to be the case, it was still a bad idea to do so while in uniform.

I read the article again. It does state that he was wearing his uniform at the time, but was off duty. It also states that he said it to a group of black officers over the radio once before. Would that trigger a IA investigation?

While I do believe in the black white double standard I'm just not seeing it much on this one.

I hesitated to respond to this thread, knowing my words would be misconstrued by shallow thinking. I am not advocating the liberal use of the word, nor am I minimizing its power to offend. When you have a conversation about the word, but refuse to say the word, you are being childish.
Taking the word, and putting it in the closet doesn't get rid of it; it merely preserves the stink and rancor.
And your comment about living on an island is laughable. I have taught school in a mostly black school for the past 38 years, dude. The fact that you thought the issue with the police officer was worthy of bringing up here indicates to me that you’re the one with the "us and them" mentality.

The N word is considered by most as a racial insult and also a hate word. It is used at times not as a racial hate term but most still do not want to hear it.

The double standard comes from when you see some blacks use it to address one another but will label anyone who is not black who uses the word, a racist or want to kill them. IMO how can you hate one person that uses it and like another who does only difference being skin color? We're all the same color underneath right?

But regardless any person in uniform should show the utmost professionalism in all aspects to including refraining from racial slurs. Even out of uniform.

I do agree with Brett, I wonder if this cops boss was white and didn't fire him out of fear of being labeled as a racist. Some people like to pull the race card.
