I'm guessing being able to cut a 1.54 off the foot brake and running that same kind of spool up (125 shot) on the street is what caused this:

overdrive gear? (I don't know squat about automatic transmissions)

The little nub that is sticking out is from a shaft behind that gear, is that the output shaft? here are more picts:

The only other thing that concerned me is that this thing seems like its a little burnt or has wear on the back of it:

And the teeth on this seemed kind of worn but I dunno if that is normal:

Can I just replace the broken parts and go or is there a high probability of other broken stuff in this thing? I have my original BRF core in my shed and was considering taking some of the hard parts and putting it in this transmission. I just want to get it up and running while I gather the parts to put in a 400.

As a side note, that shaft that broke is TINY. I can't believe that is what is transmitting the power to the rear wheels. It's only about 7/8ths in diameter and hollow.

What kind of 400 would I need to stand up to the abuse I'm dishing out? I've been told that even a relatively stock 400 is pretty tough to kill. The car ran a 1.54 7.0@95 11.2@118 on the only quarter mile run I had a chance to do. That was with something like 55% torque converter slippage. I crossed the line at around 5100 in overdrive.

5100 in overdrive?!!! No wonder it broke!! Read the full throttle blasts in overdrive thread. You should be racing in d not od You can get a 200 that will handle your power and retain the drivability of having 4 gears instead of putting a 400 in..You just cant abuse the tranny..Im no tranny guru but you cant just replace what broke either cause trannys are precision instruments if all that craked and broke theres gotta be metal elsewhere in the tranny converter and cooler Imo...HTH

Time for new parts

The Planet will need to be inspected and may be ok...its probably shot tho

From the looks of the pics of the snout on the forward drum in the shot of the Center support it is probably bad as well. i.e- needs to be tor down further possibly.

Give Lonnie Diers a call at Extreme Automatics hell hook you up or guide you in the right direction.

Was that a hardned input shaft?

Yeah a 400 is stronger but will weigh more and has to be modified to lower the line pressure. Do a search on th400 line pressure. Had 400s for like 5 years. I have a 200 back in and like driving it more now.

Still running a stock intermediate shaft? Don't your close buddies teach you anything? No wonder it broke.

You don't need nitrous to break that shaft. But it helps.

Those are the things that give up in the trans.Billet forward drum and ring gear will correct those types of failures. You should also consider an input shaft and carrier upgrade.Any of those 4 parts mentioned can fail causing a no move condition. When concerned about getting stuck because of parts failures insist on a complete set of billet parts for your trans. These 4 items are known to fail in stock applications, nevermind what we all do to these things with the boost cranked up.

You're talking about converter charge pressure, not line pressure.

200-4R weighs 132 lbs.
THM400 weighs 130 lbs.
It's a misconception that the 400 weighs more than a 200-4R.

Who said I had any close buddies?

About the converter slippage; I wouldn't have had an engine left if I left it in D and ran it all the way through the quarter :) I don't know what kind of rpm the engine would have been turning.

As far as the 400 swap, having an overdrive is not as pleasing to me as being able to drive to and from the track without the fear of a broken transmission. Especially considering that the car is not a daily driver.
Don't you think this overdrive business is overrated? Nevermind the fact that millions of cars didn't have an overdrive and drove around just fine, cars like my wifes 07 honda civic turn insane rpm on the freeway and no one thinks twice about it. I've driven for hours on end at 4500 rpm in 5th gear in that poor 4 banger. I used to drive my T5/3.89 gear firebird everywhere, never bothered me except the noise (that car was loud, the Buick isn't)

I'm just really hesitant to just buy a 400 when I don't really know what I'm getting. It's for this reason why I usually do all of my own work, engine, heads etc.
I just don't have enough of an interest in autos to try and build one. I'm also trying to build an autoX car out of a thirdgen Camaro. So I really just don't have the time to do all these things at once.

Since it sounds like this tranny is basically shot, wouldn't I be further ahead just doing the 400?

The question for me is what components I need in a 400 for it to live down into the 9s reliably (I don't plan on sitting in the 10s forever)
I hate not knowing about something well enough to make educated decisions.

A properly built 400 w/a 34 element sprag and a good valve body is good for 800 plus hp/750 lbs ft.The th400 gear ratio is much better for a fast car just no overdrive. The th400 takes more power to drive but the benefits of the closer ratio in a fast car make that a non important issue.

And some 400s weigh even less
