I bought a new Tial 38mm wastegate to replace my defective ATR gate. I put about 100 miles on it after the install last year and then maybe 60-70 miles on it this year. I am/was going to the track tonight so I went out for a test run and I have no boost control at all. I pulled the gate and it is locked up and I can not get it free. Anyone else have this problem? At least my ATR gate lasted more than 200 miles!

wow this is THE SECOND tial wastegate problem I have heard of, in my whole life. Maybe Tial_Sport can check in here. But I do not have racing experience so I dont know what could cause a gate to close up in the first place.

But if your running a t67, a 38mm might have some problems at high boost; I am asuming this because the 38mm gate only support so many pounds of boost and so much horse power. Once you pass the operating point of the gate who knows what could happen. Im not sure though, just commenting.

Again this is personally the SECOND EVER problem I have heard about with using tial wastegate, in my whole short 25years of life. The FIRST problem I heard about was a crazy supra guy trying to controll 30psi with a 38mm gate on a t70. Well make a long story short that gate couldn't handle it and it locked up on him, he bought another TIAL gate though but this next time around he got a 44mm gate. AND sense hasn't had one single problem.

i never had ANY issues on a t-67 w/ a 38 mm tial!!!!! and i ran the crap out of my syclone anywhere from 5-35 psi where ever i wanted to set it but they say your not supposed to run leaded gas w/ the 38 ......i did and no issues in 300 passes and street driving

I found the problem. The valve was frozen in its housing. The 38 worked flawlessly last year but the valve was closed all the way and frozen in place today when I tried it. I took it apart and had to press the valve out and cleaned it with emory cloth and never siezed it and seems to be working fine now. I have been very happy with the Tial until this but this makes me wonder about it.

i'm pretty sure i know what the problem is, i know you e-mailed tech about this (i get that e-mail addy)

there are two valves for the 38, race and non race :D

I hate to disagree with XxDarksidexX on this, but here are my experiences with the Tial 38mm.

I ran a Tial 38mm on my old Grey car with excellent results. The combo in a nut shell was a 274 CI Off Center with GN 1s, PT74 GT-Q non bb turbo with a .85 A/R PTE housing, Eastern SS 3" external wastegate downpipe with one Tial 38mm equipped with a large blue 14.5 psi spring. The wastegate hole on my turbine housing was ported to the exact same diameter as the piping that was on my downpipe, which I believe was 1.75" OD. I ran a manual bleeder valve that was mounted in the center console. I had perfect boost control from as low as 17psi with the valve closed and a maximum of 32psi.

Yes, everyone told me I was going to have problems with boost control with this wastegate and that I should have gone bigger for the power I was making. (around 850-860 fwhp) But it worked flawlessly. I do recommend a 44mm for use on applications making more than 800 hp or on turbos larger than a 70 GT-Q tho, I was just trying to replace a old worn out Deltagate and didn't want to alter anything. The Supra guy probably had control issues because of the extreme amounts of exhaust flow from a mild 2JZ combo. I only wish our setups were as efficient as the 2JZ.

They make two different valve stem options for the 38mm. One that is specifically designed to be used with leaded race gas and one that is not.

I recommend this wastegate to all my friends who are looking to replace either a Deltagate or an old ATR gate. For what it's worth, I ran C16 in this car all the time and only took it to the track maybe 3-4 times a year, BG was one of them, never had a problem with the valve sticking or any problems. The one I had did not have the specific valve stem for use with leaded race gas. Guess I just got lucky. Tial will get you straight with your issues. Good company.
Just my O2's worth.
