As far as the original stock timing set, mileage has some to do with the failure, but the real problem is time. These cars are 20 years old now. The nylon coating just becomes brittle and breaks down over time.

Yup! I had no problem with the original, and until I went roller, I used GM OEM parts.

yea but 72 grand? can my jump that quick? everyone elses went when they were in the triple digits... :(

I just put on edlebrock double roller timing set with cam and it went on like butter and no slack in the chain whatsoever, like i've heard about others and will be breaking engine in this weekend. So wish me luck.

keep us posted i just installed the same one.but not ready to run yet

Yea, I plan on fixing it right away. i never drive my gn anyways.. ill knock it out sometime this winter.

Hey, what about lunati or edlebrock timing sets.. anyone (onefastcar) have any experience with these timing sets? theyre both by reputable engine parts companies, so im sure their warranties are squared away. Tell me what ya guys think, as they are pretty much dirt cheap at advance auto parts.. and would like to have a set built by a famous brand name...

timing sets

Hi,
You asked me, so I'll tell it like I see it.The strongest set out there is also the cheapest. A link and iron gear setup is FAR stronger than a double roller. the improvement on rollers is basically less friction. One of the downsides of rollers is noise. Specifically, noise that might set off your knock detector.
I am in the middle of an engine rebuild, and am using a Melling stock replacement. It will last until my nephews get the car, in about 30 years, hopefully. I bet that aftermarket companies like Edelbrock outsource items like timing chains, so you are probably getting a Melling or FM piece in a different box.You could call them an ask, if they will admit it. That's my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth. Good luck with your task!

The question is what chain/set is going to last longer, not which chain is stronger?

The cheapest, like Melling, use soft gears which allow the chain to stretch, or become loose. One of the best sets made for Buicks is a Rollmaster, which is made off-shore.

Edelbrock may outsource them, but uses a billet gear which makes them a quality piece for a flat tappet cam.

With the very high spring pressures that a roller cam has, especially a solid roller, a top notch chain set is a must .

After many years of building Buick engines, Edelbrock is the "minimum" set we now use. With even normal use, the cheap sets, after ~5K miles will be as loose as a stock set after 100K miles.

This is NOT an opinion, or bashing of anyone else's opinion, just what we have found based upon doing a rebuild on LOTS Buick V-6 engines , about one every week for the past few years.:)

ahh I see. very good info there. Actually, as far as noise, i like a quiet engine, but if its at the cost of durability, ill suck up the noise.
what about comp cam's stuff? anyone?

I'm to pooped to get this thing started today just have turbo and intercooler to go will finish up monday or tuesday and start this pig, but don't think my timing cain will be an issue at all.

Well i'm finally fired up and she's running great man this thing is tons quieter than before and none of that rockin she has much better throttle response this is with 35 miles on the engine and the piece of mind with this double roller (edelbrock) can't be beat, sorry it took so long gettin back i had some issues but all is great.
